    Video Codecs for Windows 7

so I just installed win7 but I cant get any vids to work, did my normal routine of installing divx+xvid and adding coreAVC(with haali).
sound works but the image looks like crap, and in some occasions it gets cropped so I just see the top part of the video and just black nothing over it.

so, anyone know a way to fix it, or just easier, direct me to a codecpack or something that will take care of everything for me

CCCP (a codec pack) is like everything you will need 99% of the time in terms of codecs.

yeah Ill never stop using MPC

    @gokulo
so, I just add CCCP and skip the seperate packages of divx/xvid?

    edit:
installed nothing but CCCP, still not working. when I watch x264-files it gets zoomed in somehow, and regular avis are still missing the top of the image (it gets moved down half a screen)

I always download divx, xvid, and the haali media splitter then run it in kmplayer. I prefer kmplayer due to its functionality

I think it comes to a personal preference mostly, but CCCP has been all I needed since I started using it.
    That and Mediaplayer Classic.

try kmplayer!! the only gripe I have about it is that it's not compatible with windows aero, disables it each time you play. what's great about the program though, is customizable keys and buttons. like for me, mousewheel click toggles fullscreen, mwheel up/down is volume, mouse 4/5 is skip forward/backwards 5sec. There's also a lot of different video settings you can play with, sharpen/soften, blur, mirror image, rotate image, can mess with contrast, brightness, saturation... it's like photoshop for video playback. For subtitles, you can tweak the timing if it's off a bit.

Fresh install of Win7 + CCCP is all you need, you can uninstall the standalone DivX/XviD/Haali installs.

If you're having weird video problems in MPC, make sure that you go into the Options box and select one of the EVR options on the Playback -> Output page, probably "EVR Custom Pres.".

This'um. Freshly installed 7 last weekend and this was all I've done and haven't run into any issues with playback so far. ffdshow tryouts is slightly more updated, as well.

Might give KMplayer a run through later, though I've no complaints with mpc hc. :<

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack w/ WMP. Never had any problems with it, and always out performed VLC, MPC or CCCP.

There is no reason to use a Codec Pack if you're even remotely familiar with computers, ever. They're built for soccer moms and teenagers that don't know what they're doing, or don't care about the many headaches associated with them.

    Why Codec packs are bad.

The reason I stay away from k-lite and CCCP, was back in the day, they were bundled with a lot of spyware/bloated junk. It might've changed since then but installing the 3 seperate things take little time for me anyways and I know exactly what's going into my system

CCCP has NEVER installed spyware or bloated junk. Please think before you bad-mouth one of the few codec packs that DOESN'T fuck it up. That's the kind of attitude that leads to this:

Despite the author mentioning it specifically, CCCP does none of the things he complains about. He doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, and if you're seriously suggesting that juggling a half-dozen individual codecs and splitters is somehow better than one well-built package that contains everything you need, you have no business giving computer advice to anyone either. There's absolutely no reason to mess with individual codecs unless you have something particularly uncommon (like that one KaZaa porn clip that uses fucking Indeo 4, wtf?) or you're doing encoding yourself and need the VfW filters.

Stay away from K-Lite and a few of the other notorious ones - they HAVE done things like install spyware or massive numbers of unnecessary filters that DO cause problems. CCCP is well-behaved and installs an entirely reasonable set of codecs. It doesn't install spyware, it doesn't jack priorities up, it doesn't have pirated software. Hell, here's the list of what it does install:

    FFDShow - 9.5mb
    Haali Media Splitter - 2.25mb
    FLVSplitter - 340kb
    Mpeg2DecFilter - 433kb
    VSFilter - 1mb
    WavPack filter - 220kb
    MPC-HC - 7.5mb
    Settings/Uninstall apps - 1mb

The only thing on that list that's even questionable is WavPack, which is included due to a direct request from the Matroska developers. There's a reason everyone recommends CCCP nowadays - it's not the monster that was K-Lite Mega, it's what a codec pack is supposed to be.

That was actually reaaally informative, thanks. lol I'd been wanting to use CCCP because some guides involving Tversity for certain filetypes were based around it, but was also under the impression that codec packs in general weren't worth messing with and potentially hazardous with no exceptions.

yeah Im aware that packs usually brings along shit you dont need, but Im really not in the mood to disect each and every single file that enters my computer to allow me video playback. usually I can tell when it shits up my computer and from the 20 hours Ive been using it CCCP is doing exactly what its supposed to do (it even fixed my problem with never getting surround to work, only pushing out stereo).

yeah I guess I could fix MPC by going through all the internal/external filters, but like I said, not really in the mood right now, and KMPlayer had no problems whatsoever with giving me what I need (and its handling of subtitles is the best Ive come across so far)

all in all, thanks to everyone for the hints, tricks and help with my problem
