Thanksgiving

We're an appetizers family.

There's the aunt who brings the spinach dip in the bread bowl, the aunt who brings the sausage on toothpicks with assorted mustards. Somehow shrimp cocktails end up on the table too. There's also the cousin who brings her 7-layer dip, and the family basically fills up on appetizers before we ever cut the turkey. Every Thanksgiving, we have pretty much the same dishes prepared by the same people with the same recipes from the dawn of time. As each cousin reaches adulthood and starts a family, a new dish enters the scene.

Before my wife and I, it was my cousin's 7-layer dip. My wife now makes a Chocolate pie for dessert, and we have two new married couples this year, so I look forward to the new food additions.

When we have the family over at my house my dad smokes a turkey all day. Usually has a light rub with pepper, salt, and anything else he feels like throwing on. My mom makes candied sweet potatoes as well as regular baked potatoes for my grandfather. Other than that its the typical stuffing, cranberry, etc etc. Usually ends with my uncle having a whole bottle of Sambuca and my grandfather refusing to drink anything other than ginger ale.

Almost forgot. The cousins all pass out on any couch/bed space we can find before dessert so we have the energy to stay up drinking later on.

My responsibilites on Thanksgiving:

Make homemade cranberry sauce, and dump sugar in there.
Drink beer.
Watch football with family.
Escape before the arguments start.
Some shore bars are open on Thanksgiving, go there when escaping.

I hate holidays. Only exception that comes to mind is Fourth of July. I usually hate depressive "get me the fuck out of here" drinking but enough "quiet time with the family" drives me to the edge.

Since I'm Jamaican, we jerk the turkey with Jerk Seasoning. Oh, I also like Baked Macaroni and Pumpkin Pie ! Also we got a bunch of Jamaican Ginger Beer flavors in the fridge...Ginger Beer > Ginger Ale! Also Baked BBQ Chicken, Fried Chicken, Mashed Potato, Gravy, Cranberry Sauce, tuffing same ole same ole... I hate homemade sweet potato pie though, too stringy!!! I like bread pudding.

Searched this thread looking for cooking ideas. I had sweet potato seasoned wedges at a restaurant a few weeks ago that were great, which I might try to make. I kinda want to do something epic but easy, if that exists

me and the bf are gunna attempt to make food. I have no clue how to make anything and he's "okay" so it'll be interesting. afterwards we're gunna head to some friends house and hang out~

also green bean casserole is disgusting :X I hate mushrooms though. My favorite thing is the cranberry sauce, surprisingly. oh and the times my dad made lamb instead of turkey was god

Just me and my roommate for Thanksgiving and the same menu 5 years running. Roast cornish hens with apple walnut stuffing, baked yams, cranberry sauce and blueberry cream cheese pie for dessert.

I'm still deciding whether to cook for 3 or only for myself tomorrow lol. Because now still running out of idea on the last non-vegeterian dish. But won't have any turkey, just substitute it with a asian roast pork that i have marinated since sunday >.>
