The only way Ireland will be vindicated is for a rematch. Win or lose, at least it wouldn't be because of a blatant intentional violation of the rules.
Even replaying the game wouldn't be fair on Ireland (although I accept it would be better than the current situation obviously) as they won the game on Wednesday and the incident happened in extra time as the tie was a draw over the two legs.

If the game was replayed Ireland would start 1-0 down again from the 1st leg.

A one off winner takes all game in a neutral venue would be fair. But I can't see there even being a replay. France being in the world cup is worth more money to FIFA than Ireland being there.

FAI should sue FIFA for loss of earning from not being in the World Cup, in football these days money is the only thing that talks and if FIFA think they'll get sued everytime they/their officials mess up they'll fast track in a solution.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. The reason why FIFA isn't doing anything is because Ireland historically is less of a draw than France. Anybody who follows the game realizes this. Had the roles been reversed FIFA would have announced a rematch within a day at the most.

I'm sure there were people arguing for the game to be replayed within FIFA's halls. But after a few days when it really began to sink in how much money would be lost should Ireland knock off France in said rematch, well, we see the result. I pray that the same exact thing happens to France next round.

    ^ won't happen, shouldn't happen.

These things always happen in football. In terms of the damage there isn't any difference between a disallowed goal caused by a poor offside call/red card/poor foul call in the box and a handball. If you repeat this match you'll have to repeat at least ten thousand games in the past.

Sucks for Ireland, but yeah. Rules are clear.

Referee mistakes = fair game unless the referee makes a "rule" mistake, i.e. if he allows a goal from a direct shot of an indirect freekick.

    Decisions of the Referee
The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final.

The referee may only change a decision on realising that it is incorrect or, at his discretion, on the advice of an assistant referee or the fourth official, provided
that he has not restarted play or terminated the match.
Match can't be replayed, and FIFA did the right thing following the Laws of the Game that FAI agreed to before engaging in competition.

A referee (or where applicable, an assistant referee or fourth official) is not held liable for:
-any kind of injury suffered by a player, official or spectator
-any damage to property of any kind
-any other loss suffered by any individual, club, company, association or other body, which is due or which may be due to any decision that he may take under the terms of the Laws of the Game or in respect of the normal procedures required to hold, play and control a match.
Referees cannot be sued, and FIFA itself has a good probability of winning any suit brought against it. It has the money, it has the lawyers, and it has the Laws all participants agreed to behind it.

So what if this happens during the olympics? The IOC has reversed gold medals when shenanigans were found after the fact. Or is Olympic Soccer not taken very seriously and therefore nobody really tries to pull the shit they would during a professional FIFA match?

In other words, why must cheaters be given a shrug and 'well we can't do anything about it NOW' attitude when clearly non-rematch remedies exist like disqualification, monetary fines, etc?

Just allow instant replays on questionable goals to be reviewed by an official in a booth and add stoppage time accordingly. Of course I can see this being abused by goals being challenged to find a violation that isn't there.

Olympic soccer is like every other sport, no one watches it until the final if their country is in it.

I also wouldn't call them "cheaters". The ref missed the call. While a lot of people try to ride the offsides line, if there is a missed call, they usually don't know that they were offsides they think that they timed it perfectly.

If anyone in any sport gets away with a call, they aren't going to admit it to the official, just not going to happen.

What I consider cheating is when pitchers in baseball use stuff to make their pitches better, or when you spy on the other teams practice (Bellichek) etc. Committing any offense on the field of play and the ref doesn't see it is just bad officiating.

FIFA governs Olympic soccer as well so nothing will happen. I'm not saying its fair, something has to be done but current laws won't allow a rematch.

The thing is, FIFA is responsible from over 200 countries and certain parts of the world (like African teams, lower divisions) simply can't afford to implement high-tech systems in their stadiums. You have to set some standards in order to maintain the so called "fair play" for the entire world. Its a huge responsibility to implement such changes when you are dealing with 208 countries. Continental federations like UEFA are also bound to FIFA rules and regulations.

You can't record the match with a webcam, those live coverages cost millions of dollars. You need extremely complicated equipment to get a good visual. Do you think you can see a handball from a regular, cheap telecam? Especially on daytime when you consider the fact that most stadiums are still not suitable for night matches?

UEFA is experimenting 2 additional linesman currently. I'm almost 100% sure that we'll have 5 referees on the field by 2012 (excluding the current "4th" official) but a replay system simply won't happen.

Most professional leagues (Upper Divisions) are televised, so they can use that as the basis for the replay system like it is used in the NFL. Just set up a monitor on the field, a spot upstairs where an official cues up the film, presto. Doesn't seem like that much of an endeavor, considering the technology used is fairly old now.

In top leagues, right. But live coverage is limited to certain teams in other parts of the world.

Not sure what countries don't televise their top league. I know in Asia/Middle East/Central and South America the majority seem to televise. I've even seen a league game from Africa being televised (not sure why Thailand had an African channel).

Oh, I agree that it won't happen. But it's nowhere even close to an accident what Henry did. Seriously, watch the video. It was a blatant attempt to do something not legal within the game. This is cheating. While I understand where you're coming from, FIFA is essentially rewarding France for getting away with an infraction. Which I do not agree with. If worse comes to worse implement instant replay only in the later rounds of qualifiers. Something, anything. It's just frustrating to see a team busting their ass, get fucked over by a penalty and then watch as that action causes them to lose. Then FIFA thumbing their noses at them to take it a step further. And don't even get me started on how the French team feels they don't owe any apology at all. Fuck that noise.

The beautiful thing about soccer is the simplicity of it. Games and variations sprung up all around the world at different periods unrelated to one another because its so natural and simple to play. An invasion of technology into the sport would just be awful in my mind. Think of the arabs playing soccer in their sandals in the dusty fields, Russians playing in the street, south americans playing in a grassy, weed-filled field. Replay doesn't belong in soccer. Was it a blown call? Yep. But that comes with the territory of human judgement.

Well with no replay, here's hoping France get a tough group anyway then when they do the draw on Dec. 4th.

I would say ban Henry from all World Cup participation but that's kinda harsh, plus it is the main fault of the referee and official/s. Perhaps ban them (from World Cup matches) instead or hand them a suspension. It seems like they've read Stuart Attwell's Guide to Shit Refereeing.

Henry knew the risk and consequences knowing full well the ref or linesmen could've seen what he was doing, alas, he went ahead regardless to do the deed and got away with it. Some might say he got lucky.

I think hating on Henry and asking for a long suspension is unfair, most he could have got was a red card and miss next France international game that would be first game during world cup and that's it, i could write pages of people faking penalties, using hands to score, etc.

I don't like camera repetition, in a world cup i think last time a game was replayed was like 60 years ago, now with schedules, TV sponsors and tickets sold, moving a calendar on a world cup or another international competition is a pain for any hosting country, using extra referees means more money to pay them to sell games!, but anyways soccer is and will be my favourite sport, i'll keep whining and flaming referees every time shit like this happen, crying cuz Spain can't pass a quarter finals of a world cup .

All the butthurt Irish are fucking hypocrites. Did you all of a sudden forget about this?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<obje...mbed></object>

Keane handles the ball, and THEN you get a penalty. But of course FIFA only doesn't care about Ireland because they're small. Get the fuck over it. You had your chances to win the game many times over and you couldn't.

That's why I said to do it to the refs/officials instead, not Henry.
