That's what im wondering too FD, fuck the bullshit. They need to stop calling it gratuity if their going to take it at gunpoint.

lol yeah right. If you hate the "antiquated system" of tipping, you're really gunna love the new system of paying 20-30% more for your food so restaurants can pay the servers a wage appropriate for dealing with mostly demanding and unforgiving people all day. And good luck getting the service you'd get from people who are actually working for their money instead of going through the motions.
No, they for sure didn't. Most of the time when you eat out it either states the mandatory gratuity thing on the receipt itself which obviously you dont get till the end. Some places have it in fine print on the menu's, but what if you didn't get the menu or it's not there.
shitty service, 15%, good service 25-50% depending if I'm just paying for me or for others too. They're probably just having a shitty day, oh no they didn't wait on you hand and foot! Grow a pair and get someones attention then, no need for you to be an asshole back to them
Gratuity in general is retarded when it's only a small percentage of the service industry that actually benefits from it.
If there's no mention of the gratuity on the menu or something then that's why it may not have held up in court. If it's on the menu and tells you "We're going to charge you ____" and you decide to stay, I don't really see why it wouldn't hold up in court.
Now if the service is so terrible and orders always wrong, why do you and your co-workers continue to go there?[edit] also there is this one restaurant out here where I always get terrible service. It seems whenever co-workers wanted to do an outing they wanted to go there, so of course it was always mandatory gratuity. And because of this the waiters took forever, rarely refilled drinks, every single time get the orders wrong, and really act like they don't give a shit since they know they're getting a nice tip no matter what. I seriously hate that place.
I don't even fucking know, they're the ones that wanted to go (I don't work at that place anymore). Every time there was something to celebrate (ie. someone got a raise) it was the first place out of their mouths. I always tried to suggest other places but they always seem to think it'll be amazing then we all get annoyed when we're actually there.
The food isn't even all that great and is rather pricey to boot.
How long were you there for, 2-3 hours? More? Most waiters get paid around $4 if their lucky. You not leaving them a tip means they just made $12 for 3 hours. Not to mention that you probably had 4+ people waiting on your party so it's split from there into less and less. Stop being a pampas asshole and leave your tip. If you can't afford it then don't go out. What happens when they don't make tips mandatory is some people will think that $50 is acceptable on that $600 tab, and that's just downright disrespectful.
Fuck, I know this is General, but replace places with games and that's totally ffxi like 90% of the time.
Well, the jps do get things right some of the time...
Edit:
I don't know where you're referring to, but here in Oregon, servers are paid minimum wage ($8.40). Also, people are chiming in saying that even bad service gets 15%. If you get a job in a restaurant that gets no business, then you have more to worry about than your tips, but if you're working in a decent business, you're not going to get only one party for 2-3 hours that leaves no tip.
I've gone to the manager beforehand and said that I'm not paying gratuity unless the waiter/ess earns it. I make sure to emphasize that since they know they are getting grat, that they tend to give terrible service. Managers [usually] understand and make an effort to either come check on you themselves or make sures to pep talk the server. Do this the next time you go and make sure you say that you have experienced shitty service in the past because of the mandatory grat and and see if that doesn't shake things up a bit. Most of the time you'll get managers who care, other times you'll get get ones that don't care. Those are rare but if you make a scene, you can usually get them to... you know... do their fucking job of providing good service.
Enjoy your semen hollandaise basted salmon!
Gratuity is just a method used to let the business owners get away with giving their workers shitty wages. That wont change anytime soon though since paying is better than having whatever retribution the workers come up with visited upon you or your meal.
Oh and im sure this is what Valisk has been eating from at any restaurant he tries what he says he does.

I don't preemptively say shit, but I will go full blown nigga mode after the fact if my shit is not up to par. Fuck that, I'm not sending shit back. Just take that shit off my bill and call it a night.
fuck that shit, if your service is fail, you aren't getting a tip from me. Last few times i've went out to eat the service has been fairly good but I went to this seafood resturant that was out on the lake few years back(thx katrina, ya fuckin ho) they took over an hour to bring out food and half of it was horrible, no tip, qq ensued.
If you do a good job you get tipped well from me, if not, fuck off.
Except that they're paid minimum wage here, and the tip is just adding more money in their pockets. We were there 2 hours and had 2 people waiting on us. Pampas asshole? Fuck you too, it's not about being able to afford shit or not, it's about forcing a gratuity when a large sum of money is already being spent. So I'm being an asshole because I didn't want to give my 2 waitresses 60 dollars each for 2 hours or service? Get the fuck out of here.
