I'm a UC student that's poor as shit and I think it's retarded to protest this shit.

Everyone (meaning all things in this state) needs to either receive less funding or pay more. The state can not afford to fund the UC system to the extent they have in the past, so if we want to keep the same standards of education and excellence, the money has to come from somewhere.

Shocking I know. Fucking hate college students. Assholes were protesting when AIDS research was reduced in funding this year too, as well as a million other things that had to receive less funding this year due to the economic crisis.

1-12, California has 2, 9, 10, and 12, thus the statewide Prop 13. New York is quite famous for it's rent controls, which serve a similar purpose to the intent of the prop.

Now, I'll admit I don't know about Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia, or the Texas cities. (Detroit is dying, so ignore that) But the reason other places get by without prop 13 intent stuff, is because they don't have to deal with the sheer population (and the issues that come with it) that we do.

one thing we ought to be taxing, but aren't, is oil extraction. california is one of the top oil producing states, yet we are the only one afaik without such a tax. it'd raise a lot of money and be a lot less painful than raising property taxes.

Taxing oil extraction is not a solution. The instant taxes make the cost of extraction go too high, they will stop extracting it. For example, when the cost per barrel of oil increases beyond a certain point, they start up the pumps again. The oil won't go anywhere, and doubtful they will ever come up with a replacement for oil in the near future. So if you tax it, they will just wait it out.

And amen for the GI bill. If getting loans four year ago wasn't so easy, I'd be serving now.

And I agree 100% with Demosthenes11. Heaven forbid the UC share in the economic crisis. California is bankrup; why should public universities be exempt from any of the measures taken up by everyone else? And if you don't believe that your college degree is worth every penny, then you shouldn't be going to a four year university. Take your GE at a community college for $22 a unit, and transfer to a CalState. Save 60% of the cost for the same degree.

and what price would that be? alaska has a 25% extraction tax by the way, and they seem to be doing just fine.
