I think if you're in the US it's 4.2, and then 4.3 in Europe.
I'm pretty sure it says somewhere on the Wii, I just forget where. Maybe System Info?

You can check which version you are on under the Wii system settings.
Bannerbomb Guide 4.2 Wii ( Make sure you get v2.)

Wow, sorry I didnt look for a thread. Thought I was keeping up on the forums lol. Anyway, Is there a way to download .iso files to a USB and play them insteading of burning DVDs? I'm not too keen on all of this and all I find on google is ripping backups of games you already own. If it'd be worth it, i'd buy an external but idk how this all works or what it all entails so any advice is greatly appreciated.
google usb loader gx and wbfs manager
I'm at work right now so I cant check it out, but can I buy just any cheap low GB (50-80GB) external for it or do only specific kinds work?

most anything will work, but that will point you in the right direction.
I have a Western Digital MyPassport 320gb, which has 77 games on it and still has 100.6 gb free lol. 100-250gb should be sufficient for most people who don't want to do 1-3 games at a time on a flash drive. Keep in mind that while most ISOs scrub down to smaller than 4.7gb, Smash Brothers is something insane like 7.5 gb.
Well I finally got around to doing this and i'm pretty happy with the results except that when I plug in the USB to the back of the Wii, it makes the screen qualty go down and I get these grainy stripes across the screen. Think an old TV with rabbit ear antenna getting a signal that's almost perfect, but just not quite there yet. I'm wondering if it may be the USB cable that came with the HD enclosure I bought since it's some generic ebay enclosure or is it going to do this regardless of any cable?
Since it's bumped. I just purchased a Wii (black motion + bundle) and it was already updated. Will homebrewing still be possible on the wii games front, or emulation, or either? I'm just toying around the idea of homebrewing it so I'm not really informed. And many websites I've looked into about it seem sketchy and I don't trust them.
You can softmod a black Wii console so long as it does not have 4.3 installed. It takes a little work and your major IOS files (249, etc) are probably stubbed already. So long as you can install TB36, 250, and most others, you can softmod it.
Find the serial number for your Wii, type it into google with "softmod" and find a guide. Mostly, 4.2 softmodding guides or the guide to load USB Loader GX will work just fine.
I have a 500GB elements drive (no external power supply needed) hooked up to my Wii and a fully functional loader and let me tell you... it's so worth it. I have a USB channel now with no need to change discs. All I have to do is keep the program up to date and I'll be set.

If your black wii is 4.2 you can still do homebrew / isos.
Make sure you get version 2. As always install BootMii and back up the wii just in case. Pretty good guide and safe.
Anyone actually play online with a homebrew WII and iso's games?
Mine is 4.3U, so I suppose any modding is out of the question.
I can't get MH:Tri running on USB Loader GX. If anyone else has got it running, any suggestions?
MH: Tri requires cIOS 222 or 223.
