How can you be so sure about this? The 'current' content will remain free, everything else might end up on the "premium" network. I doubt they will charge you for gaming though, unless they want to come back on their word, but everything else might take a hit.

No, they wont remove any feature from your current ps3, but they might not give you as much as before.


Demo, bonus, free downloadable content, ranking system etc....expect to see a certain amount of what used to be free content become premium. Most gamers will argue that free online gaming is all that matter, and I agree, but the addition of "premium" content is never a good thing.

First of all, I answered Tyrath's post after reading the first link and gamespot's article linked inside. The quote you subsequently posted is the exact reason why I replied to people being on the defensive, because they sound convinced nothing bad will come out of it, despite the fact there is not a single bit of worthwhile information to squeeze out of this arcticle. Why? Because it was a typical PR answer, and the one you expect to see in this kind of scenario.

The difference between you and me is that you believe it's worthwhile "information". I don't. Well, it's information on the same level you find in info-pub, but that's not saying much.

If premium content typically implied a better service for everyone, maybe I would be optimist, but if you look at the history of "premium content" and what happened to the "normal" customer, you will find more con than pro. I'm not saying its impossible for something good to come out of it, but until they give us actual information on the content, I will wait and see.

First of all, I'm sorry if the thought of Sony enlarging your anal orifice offended you. Secondly, english is not my first language, but a line like this seem to put the emphasis on you not being able to understand the difference between PR and good informations. Actually, how is the first line even negative? I want to understand why people are convinved nothing bad will happen, because I see no information in the link posted, other than the expected pre-made answer given to us by the president. Premium game is usually bad for normal user, yet people are already willing to defend it before knowing what's going to happen to them.

I still don't think Sony is lying, but there is always a gray zone that people can live with. Just take for a example a new ranking system that involve money prize. It's not something you have at the moment, but it would probably shift the real competition from the normal free userbase to "premium service". Sony didn't lie, they offered new contents, but did hurt the gaming aspect indirectly.

Funny, I think it's even more stupid to believe that you need a membership to "buy something". They already have an online shop, why couldnt their sell the additional feature there.

Premium membership will bundle a bunch of crap you don't need, yet, you will end up paying for them anyway. But I guess that's a good thing.

The only difference here is people having a more optimistic or pessimistic view of what will still remain free. I think playing games online, demos, and shit thats already free like that will remain free. It doesn't really make sense to have to pay for demos or trailers.

People really should wait for more info to come out before going nuts about it though.

In addition to confirming that 3D gaming for the PlayStation 3 was coming in 2010, yesterday's Sony Corp. global strategy presentation revealed that a premium subscription service will be added to the PlayStation Network. Those two initiatives were revealed as part of a far larger vision that will see Sony try to overtake rival Apple's iTunes service with a common content distribution system for all its media products.

Temporarily named the Sony Online Service (SOS), the ambitious initiative aims to offer a single user experience across all its network media devices, from portable media players to large-screen Bravia HDTVs. At the presentation, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai outlined the service as part of his duties as executive vice president of Sony's Networked Product and Services group, which SCE was folded into this year.

According to Hirai, the SOS will support a single user ID across all Sony products, all of which will have a common user experience.
