The only items I think are OK to sell for real money are bullshit visual town gear, like miner hats, shovels, eye patches, etc. Even then, there needs to be a way to obtain them in-game without forking over any money, simply paid with time/effort.

I certainly understand the mentality, and sure.. I'll confess occasionally I'll take a look at things and see how much simpler they are and sigh a little. But I wouldn't, and wont get upset about it. I enjoy the game for what it is, to hell if i'd pay a cent extra for ANYTHING (including mog satchel, etc), but if others really desire to do such... it's their game. People who tend to buy things that are also questable tend to quit the game early anyways, or are in it for PvP. There's always exceptions though. To go through the number sequence.
1. That's exactly what makes it sad. If people are going to walk around and call people gimp because of gear, they aren't the people i'd enjoy being around. They have bluegartr (no offense to it) to have people to post pictures of. But, for serious, anybody with any gear can reach the end, no matter how long it takes. And half of my time in VanaDiel is spent doing retarded things like finding odd-ball camps in Soulflayer turf because well, we're crazy, and it's fun.
2. Where I can see the reasoning in why people don't like it. But again, typically if everyone can by the gear, it's a hell of a lot less whining and a hell of a lot more challenging mobs. People will complain no matter what is done, at least with armor being buyable people will argue about the game and not the time inbetween.
3. It would affect gameplay in general, sure. But if it's done from the get-go, and it's done sparringly (Peacock amulet -1 instead of peacock charm, I really couldn't give a damn. In fact, I'd only get a bigger kick when someone pays $5 for their peacock amulet -1 only to replace it with a better item in days. If the equipment is the same, then shoot, higher chances for me to get some goods :3
I really don't think they're going to do things like "relic" weapons being buyable. The currency maybe, it'll lower the glory of it. But honestly, who here (anymore) really looks at a person with a relic and can say that their prize was a great accomplishment. Half the time, people say "RMT", a quarter they say "Waste of Time", and the last quarter is "is that even a relic? xyz is better". The sense of pride is pretty sad sometimes...
I go on, I semi-understand the reasoning behind it. I really don't see it as gamebreaking as everyone makes it out to be. It has always, and is always possible to spend real life money to cheap-skate your way to fame and glory, I still have a hell of a time laughing at Isladar dying, and discovering certain areas that just simply aren't visited. I dunno, I see a lot in what I do. I'm sure even those who do not like the idea of paying for armor see that kind of feeling too, but it's just my point. Whether they spent 200 to be awesome or not, i'll still laugh my butt off when they get flail'd and try to play it off.
Note: I never plan to ever pay for anything other than the subscription fees. But I'm still for it. Especially if it cuts away from certain things being overcamped. Hell, I'm still hoping that FFXIV has a system where we won't have to worry about those kinds of things...
Also, I probably got this mentality from fishing... having gotten it to the high end before they patched it back into the "minigame" in 05, and then questing for Ebisu which, as you can see from my sig, simply was never meant to be...
Sure, I spent my time and did my crap and got nothing out of it, but i'm not going to whine when I see people go 1/5 and 1/20 on the item that they simply bought with spare change off the AH. I'll just shrug it and chug it.
Why not simply fix the issue with king instead with a simple free update.Originally Posted by Shadowrunner

No thanks, but if its like "You can make your armor glowy and look cooler for 5$" etc, useless but awesome guys check this out gear Id probably take one or two things. Its like buying a new outfit for your sackperson in lbp, useless? Definitly, but turning your sackperson into raiden = awesome and totally worth the 5 bucks.
Hmm, if they offered character makeovers for $1-5, I'd be up for that. Useless stuff like that, no problems. It would actually be kinda fun.
What the fuck is with the mindset that this would even possibly be used to buy something significant to in-game progress? You must not have proper brain functionality if you even speculate that to be true..
This is what I'm thinking they'll do, but I'm worried they'll change.
For example, Neopets used to offer exclusive items buying plushies, notepads, etc. that were pretty much useless. (I think my niece only got food or something) However a few years back they added a premium membership section which you needed to subscribe to in order to access all the content.
Yes I know it's not the best example since Vaicom bought the site and they're probably the reason for it. The point I'm trying to get across is I don't want SE to start out having the ability to purchase "eye candy armor/weapons" that are overall 100% worthless other than looking cool, then start putting up stronger/better gear that you actually will want in terms of stats.
They did say there would be a fashion aspect to FFXIV, but I think that's where the Weaver class comes in, so SE RMTing fashion would probably destroy crafting.
I really don't think buying in-game items would work with FFXIV, except in the same form as what we've seen in FFXI (bonus in-game items for buying things like the Security Token, Sound Track CDs, and Tidal Talisman thingy.)
Like everyone else is saying; I definitely wouldn't play the game if you could buy any in-game battle or crafting-related items directly from SE. Ruins the experience when you work your butt off for something (weeks, months, years even) and someone else just buys it instantly for an extra $5. Even worse if it were a really good must-have item that can only be obtained by purchasing it from SE.
that fits with wadas' announcements of giving a shit about normal games and SE focusing on casual browser games like farmville etc. in the next years!
that's why they created this new currency.
If I were SE...I would sell ingame items for real money/currency. profit > the handfull of ppl not playing b/c of this.
you wanna blame a company trying to make money? go ahead, sue them!
from my players point of view, I dislike the idea of paying for ingame items.
maybe they should lower the monthly cost, or maybe make only items buyable that aren't d0rpable or craftable. so everyone knows they were bought in the ingame store. no problem with that...
I think you should have to buy Crysta to fight HNM, like tokens at an arcade. That would fix everything like botting and stuff, maybe even a guild deposit where members can contribute. Crysta is going to be the shit!
The whole concept sounds like Facebook game apps
gogo Farmville? >.>
Dude, those Xynga apps are like crack. GF has Farmville, Fishville AND Cafe World.
(CA/Farmville/Superhero City here, any more and I'd have no life whatsoever)
And it's a successful enough model, SE would be nuts not to look at it that way- though I'd be one of those players who sticks with what I can get from regular play/subscription fees, as I really don't get off on spending extra cash for fluff.
They, and everyone else knows that they would be damaging themselves if they were to taint their Final Fantasy Franchise with one of those models.
