Black screen when playing games in Win 7

So I just installed Windows 7 (fresh install on a new harddrive) today. Everytime I try and boot a game from steam I get a black screen and it freezes up. The only way to fix it is to hard reboot. I've updated my sound and video drivers. Anyone have any solutions? Aside from running XP virtual.

    Win 7 Ultim 64bit
    AMD Athlon 6000+
    4 gigs of ram
    9800 GTX

EDIT: Audiosurf works fine, but if I launch anything full screen it just freezes.

Didn't a recent update to Win7 fuck it causing B(lack)SOD? There was a big thing about it in the paper yesterday I think.

Seems it was malware fucking a few people. Apart from that, no idea sorry.

Virtual XP wouldn't allow you to play most games since they haven't programmed the vmware to use the actual video card. What driver version are you updating to? Have you tried other versions?

So running steam (and all games under steam) under XP SP3 compatible mode seems to fix the problem. Guess I'm not one of those lucky ones where steam games run fine under Win 7.
