I think the really interesting thing about this show is that it's so popular that it influences american vernacular, with things like GTL, grenades, landmines, smooshing/smashing, and all that working its way into people's everyday speech... even if they don't watch the show. Haven't really seen that since Seinfeld was on, although Seinfeld was seemingly on a much larger scale probably because it was on the air for so long.
My personal theory (after watching more reality TV programs than most people should ever consume in a lifetime) is that part of the reason why this show is so popular is that the cast members are (with a few obvious exceptions) somewhat intelligent and nowhere near as vapid or shallow as they're made out to be, or at least have more substance than our significantly low expectations of reality stars in general.
I don't think they can keep the lightning bottled up for more than 3-4 seasons but it's definitely fun while it lasts. Aside from the more skill-based well established reality competition shows (top chef, project runway), Jersey Shore is by far my favorite.
