I played a British MUD called "Avalon, the First Age" back in the 90s. It was pay to play, about $0.75 an hour. I played that game for years. It was all PK and we never realised that was odd. The politics in that game were insane. There were four player run cities and wow the warfare was insane.

I spent forever in one called ZeeMUD (was a generally small one but was my first) and then later switched over to Age of War (http://www.ageofwar.org/), which still doesn't sound as advanced as some of the above but definitely a lot of people. Was one of the MUDs where you multiboxed up to 3 characters, and I recall having a good amount of fun writing scripts and macros to control the other two from my main, complete with access lists and the whole nine yards so friends could use my healbot.

I played the Unofficial Square Soft mud back in 1999(or so), played that for a couple years, even after i got tricked into cheating by the mods and got my character deleted(by Tonces, the Truck driving cat!), till probably a year or so after ffxi came out. It actually had a pretty cool battle system based on FFTs job system, and even had some jobs based on characters from other SS games. Of course it had a bunch of areas and characters from different games(FF4/5/6/7/T(actually had an RP based besieged type system with FFT character and mobs before FFXI came out), SoM, CT), so it was pretty much a fan boys dream, the quests(which not only gave special eq and jobs, but a permanent xp bonus) were hard as hell and giving out info could get you banned.
Fun as hell game, but much of the player base were elitist jerks, sadly, that probably one of the things like I liked about it.
