Shrug, it still looks cool. Not everyone cares about doing the perfect min/max damage. It's good enough of a weapon imho. I'm sure people don't spam red curry while meriting on colibris!

So I blew some money buying random pieces of various sets.

So far it appears etching works on only really basic pieces, generally the ones that just have straight up defense and thats it, maybe a little bit of stats like vit+1, etc.

I have found that beak jerkin, beak pants, white slacks, ebony sabots, carapace mittens, are all etchable.

Wool doublet was not, as was not wool gambison.

I did the beak pants as a test to see if sets are etchable and it appears so looking at leather gear.

It's looking basically like generic gear npc bought is etchable, if you can get it at an armor shop its more than likely etchable.

Because of this we probably dont need to test every single piece of gear in the game, just individuals of each set, if it doesnt work we can semi safely assume the rest aren't either, for now.

Along with this I am seeing some patterns.

Mage gear, cloaks, sabots, sandals, etc, all seem to follow mage style etches, upwards empty triangles, light/dark/water elements (macc, matt, meva, etc etc etc) whereas light armors like leather and bone more follow wind/lightning for eva/acc, and heavy armor att/def evoliths.

This does make sense, and helps us narrow down options for what each gear has avialble for evoliths...

So onwards we continue, in the name of science! :D

    Evoliths:

    Beak Jerkin: lightning http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif6

    Beak Trousers: wind http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif3

    Carapace Mittens: fire http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif3

    Ebony Sabots: dark http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif2

    White Slacks: light http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif3

    http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif = Vs Species

    Fire: Attack/Ratt (emnitty?)

    Wind:Eva/racc (hey I see a pattern here)

Lightning: Acc (Im predicting future crit rate evoliths later on)

    Light: Magic Defense

    Ice: Magic Attack

    Earth: Defense

    Water: Magic Accuracy

    Dark: Magic Evasion

    http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif = (elemental) magic (type)

    Fire: Emnitty+

    Wind: Recast Delay-

Lightning: Magic Critical hit rate (Whaddya know?)

    Light: Emnitty-

    Ice: Magic Attack

    Earth: Conserve MP

    Water: Magic Accuracy

    Dark: Cast Time-

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...iangleDown.gif = (Weapon Type) Weaponskill: Effect

    Basically Same as http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/ff...TriangleUp.gif

And so on and so forth, once you look at it you realize its not really random at all, in fact it follows the ole pattern laid down by SE fro mthe start of the game.

    Well thats SE for you...

Does anyone know the exact level required for synths that need "Apprentice" subcrafts? I'm trying to make an Ebon Tam, but even though I got to Lv38 clothcraft, it says that it's impossible at my current cloth level.

Dont go by the guild tests, you need to be in the correct "tens digit". So 40-49.

Ah, cool. Only 2 more to go then. Thanks a lot!

Edit: Well, in a surprising turn of events, I didn't need to hit level 50 clothcraft in order to synth Ebon Tam. I only needed to be 49! 48 might be possible, but I didn't check.

Can anyone confirm how much Wolfram Steel is needed for the weapons? These are 'ex' so I don't want to screw anyone over by lotting too many.

Wiki says 1 for machismo so I won a 2nd ingot but passed it. But people are telling me it's actually 2-3, and one person even said their GS was 5, which sounds redunculous.

It's different for each weapon. If your LS plans on doing the fomors for the other drops you're going to be overflowing in ingots, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

The great sword takes 3, and I believe that's the most any of them take. I also think all of them are on wiki now

Yeah I checked, it was just that wiki was inconsistent and I was hearing multiple things from multiple people, so I wanted to check with a credible source. But as you said it seems the inconsistency isn't a prob.

Only way I'm going to get these fights done is if I build the alliances myself out of a mix of friends/lsm8/pickup. Unfortunate but it is so. I took an ally out to do Ethniu today, and after building the ally for 3-4 hours (they knew it would take that long) Ethniu was up but despawned inexplicably. Nobody aggro'd. So I'm not sure what happened..

Apologies if I need pointing elsewhere but I'm a bit confused...

I'm aiming for a Bliaut. I got a white (Ebur) pigment from Oupire and I know I have to synth a frock and get my hands on the appropriate Aptant. At which point do I dye the item to end up with a white bliaut?

Am I right in thinking that different colours can by inscribed with diff slots? Or is that utter rubbish?

The first thing you do is synergize the frock + aptant into the bliaut. Second, you dye it the color you want. Inscribing it is third. Don't add evoliths until you've got the sizes of apertures that you want (probably maxed), since you'd have to remove them all if you wanted to resize the slots.

The colors do affect the elements that can be inscribed on the slots, but I haven't really looked at which colors give which slots.

yea thats correct, also ebon frock + ebur pigment. Then ebur frock + aptant = ebur bliaut. Ebur mixes the elements so you can have a choice between dark and light elements on your slots

    Few questions:

Are these the correct possible etchings for an Ebon headpiece?

1st - Vs. Family, Dark types, Max size 6.
2nd - Vs. Family, Light types, Max size 6.
3rd - Magic Skill, Dark types, Max size 6.

Also, are synergy skill and getting "smooth synergy" the only things that play into getting the maximum aperture size? For example, someone with Lv100 clothcraft has no advantage over someone with Lv50 clothcraft when it comes to etching a clothcraft-related ebon piece?

Oh, and as far as the actual etching process goes, if you get a junky-sized slot for the 2nd or 3rd slots, you have to wipe out all slots to try again?

    0/2 Martinet, 1/2 Aqrabuamelu.

PLD + RDM duo on Martinet, COR soloed Aqrabuamelu. Id pack TH if you can spare it but the NMs so far haven't been too hard.

Im 0/2 on Martinet and its an extermly easy fight as RDM/NIN.

I tried Aqrabuamelu once so far as RDM/NIN but lack of bind, grav and such made it a pain in the ass and I just gave up because I had to go to limbus soon.

Seems you can pull it to zone and nuke and zone as it seems to take forever to walk back.

I went 1/3 on Martinet for my first, then 0/7 for a second Aptant. I've since given up caring about it. All kills were RDM/NIN solo, though 5 of the 10 had a TH4 THF poke it before it died... 0/5 on those kills.

I wonder if I could kill it as THF/NIN and just spamming the NIN wheel with any mab gear I have to at least have TH4

I went 5/35 on the two Aptant: Geoc droppers (1/17 on Frost Flambeau, 4/18 on Warabouc). Each dropped 1 of its 'other' Aptant at some point too. All drops were with TH4 present (5 different thfs, amusingly), but only about a third of the kills had thf present.

Extrapolate in whatever way makes you the least depressed.

If you are Nuke zoning Aqrabamelu in that matter it shouldn't be a problem. It just might take a long while. If you aren't zoning you just have to worry about Cold Breath which is based on HP...usually once you get it around 20% health, it's damage is fairly weak but you just have to deal with the bind effect. If you can pull off about 250 dmg a minute, then it should only take 40 minutes which is my average time when I solo it COR/THF.

    More Synergy Findings!

Ok now less about evoliths and apertures, and more about the synergy process itself!

Your skill vs the level required for a synergy process influences how much pressure and impurities you generate per fewell feeding.

It seems that impurity floors at 5%, and pressure is based on amount of fewell fed. (This one is all over the palce and I can't discern any noticeable pattern)

We might be able to semi accurately predict the level of an item simply based on our impurity ratio, I think 5% is 1 level below, 6% 2, 7% 3, etc etc.

When you reach some point, roughly 35~40%, impurity ratio, you begin to run the risk of an elemental overload. Im fairly certain it will always be in the form of whatever element you have at the highest.

    Fire: Disease

    Ice: Paralyze

    Wind: Knockback

    Lightning: Stun?

    Water: Poison

Light/Dark: nothing but lowers fewell for 4 base elements it originates from, (Ice/earth/water/dark, fire/wind/lightning/light)

thus as you can imagine, wind, light, and dark overloads are the least impacting of overloads as they dont leave you with any form of nasty side effect to deal with.

The overload is never gaurenteed though, as I have many times hit 99% impurity ratio and gone 2 more fewell feedings without an overload.

Now what else I've noticed is in fact, damage taken from an overload is exactly the furnace's pressure, minus your resist to that element.

I noticed this when doing fewell feedings with a friend and we always took the same amount of damage, but when I swapped to goblin hat I began taking 5 less damage. Thus, it pretty much looks like your elemental resist lowers damage in a direct linear relationship, 1 resist = -1 damage.

Looks like you tanks with fire resist builds can put em to a second use eh? XP

    What else...?

Oh, the closer you are to an items skill it seems the higher chance of skillups you get, much like fishing. Skillups on an apron at skill level 10 are few and far between, but I rocked levels 10-15 in under 15 minutes on Ebony sabots, which I now appear to have capped on.

    That OR

Etching synths have a much higher skill up rate, it could go either way and we'll need to look at more data.
