    LCD damaging eyes?

I got my new monitor the day before thanksgiving and spent one weekend with it. The brightness/contrast hurt my eyes, but I didn't think anything of it because the picture looked good. By day two, I couldn't stand it anymore and I had to turn it down to like 70% on each. I get to class the next Teusday and I have a LOT of trouble seeing what my teacher is writing on the board in any color. I go home and say fuck it, turn it down to 30/30 on each bright/contrast and by the next class, I can see darker colors fine, but bright colors (red, yellow) I have a lot of trouble with. So it's another week later with 30/30 and I'm still having a lot of trouble with the bright colors and I've sat in this same seat two semesters (physics 1 earlier and now physics II) and have never had trouble seeing anything she's ever written until last week, so my only deduction is that it could possibly be the monitor? And if so, what could I do about it?

how big is the screen, and how close are you sitting to it?

Do you mostly use the monitor with lights on in the background of your room, or mainly in a poorly lite/dark room?

Ideally, when staring at a computer screen you're supposed to rest your eyes every 15-20 minutes or so. Make sure you aren't sitting too close to the monitor (for a 22" monitor, sit about 2-3 feet away at least) and that you have plenty of light in the room so you're not sitting in the dark. If all else fails, see your eye doctor :/

I go by sunlight system, so if it's light out then there's light in my room, if not, then it's dark. As for distance, no more than a foot, as it's connected to my laptop, which I use to type, so yea, limited distance there, since it's not a desktop

It's not green pen on a whiteboard you're having trouble with is it? I remember we got told in training to try to minimize our use of that combo as it's the first to cause problems for people with any visual issues at all (course when all the other pens run out you have no choice). Sounds daft - but I know from experience that certain makes of board pen write fainter than others by quite a margin and if they've changed what they're using it could just be that.

It's a white board, and she uses green, but I can see that color just fine (it's a darker green if that matters). She uses multiple colors though for diff examples on problems. It's the light red and the yellow that I'm having a lot of trouble with and before a week ago, I've never had any trouble of this sort in my life

Basically, you're sitting far too close to that screen, for far too long, without proper lighting. Sit as far back as you can from the monitor (as mentioned previously), and get a lamp or two to use at night.

Drop a couple bucks on a cheap USB keyboard so you can sit further away from it.

Try 80 Bright, & 50 Contrast. Then chnage your colors to 50 Red, 48 Green, 34 Blue; that should be the defualt color scheme for 5500k color temp.

Furthest away I could get from it would be another foot, I'd say. My room is rather small and it's kinda like this

OOOOOOO (free space, maybe half a foot)
    XXXXXXXXX(tv, laptop, monitor)
    OOOOOOO (free/sitting space)
OOOOOOO(Free/sitting space), 1-2 feet total between the dual O rows
    XXXXXXXXX(Futon)
    xxxxxxxxxx (ab lounge 2 pro).

So basically, unless I go onto the futon(which doesn't fold out because of the ab lounge behind it), I can't rly go back any further than I sam now (though I could move things back just a smidge), so I'm kinda crammed.

I guess I'll try moving it back as far as it can go w/ the first row of OOOOs

For any sites that you read a lot on make custom stylesheets for them using varying shades of gray and black (i would probably skip white too much contrast in the colors then). I have found that to help a lot as pure white on LCDs fries my eyeballs, and unfortunately 9/10 sites on the net have white background with white text lol. You can feel good too because you'll be going green and saving energy by changing the background from white to black/dark gray! (half sarcastic, was remembering a slashdot article about all the energy google would save if it went from white>black background ><)

    Here you go:

Like others have said, it may be you sitting too close to your monitor or looking at it for too long. Your eyes will adjust to being used to viewing the images at that distance, so when you look at something more distant, it may not be as clear. My cousin had that problem, and his eye doctor told him to do some kind of exercise where you stare something close for a while, and then focus on something behind it that's more distant, and then keep switching back and forth to "exercise" your eyes, in a way.

This is about the extent of how much room I have in my room. Don't mind the messiness, as I have no intention of cleaning.

Hmmm beyond sitting as far back as you can, changing stylesheets, keeping the room well lit, and frequently looking at distant objects to relieve eye strain maybe you could try putting something white/bright behind where the monitor is. It looks in the picture that its very dark gray on the wall behind it so maybe lessening the contrast of the monitor image and whats behind it might alleviate some eye strain as well. Of course I'm just making guesses at this point, but it's something to try! =D Maybe a piece of poster board or something would work as a good test piece. Either way good luck with the problem.
