Question: Is there going to be another "pre-purchase" buy type campaign by chance? I'm just curious because I'd love to get in the beta after reading all the comments.

probably another Beta weekend in late may, and it's "back in stock" on https://buy.guildwars2.com/ now
So anybody know how the formula for currency exchange works? It didn't look like there was any way to place X amount of gems up and request Y gold in return, that it was just based on that one currency exchange tab of the Trading Post. I don't really know then how the price for gems is going to fluctuate if players don't directly control the flow of prices. I assume Arenanet has some crazy formula to determine how valuable gems are, but I can't find anything on this. Anybody know?
I think its a simple demand and supply formula. It goes up the more people are trading it, and goes down when trading slows down over time. When beta started it was low around 4 silver for 100 gems, but at the end of beta people had money and were trading alot more to try out the stuff, it shot up to around 8 silver per 100 gems.
And they haven't said what the RL $ to gem ratio is?
Pretty much. It seems to work exactly like traders from GW1 except that the buying and selling prices are the same. Although I think that means prices are determined by which direction trading is going rather than overall trade frequency, which makes sense anyways. I have no idea (and I don't think anyone's seen) if the supply of gems can run out if no one's been selling them, though.
As an aside, here's an interesting example of how the traders work for those who didn't play GW1. Globs of ectoplasm are the main secondary currency used in Guild Wars 1 due to the fact that you can only hold/trade 100 platinum at a time, and most high-end trades use ecto exclusively (although other valuable items may be used as well). For the GW 7th Anniversary Celebration that started last week, the Shing Jea Boardwalk is open for a 2-week period, giving people the opportunity to get a lot of Lucky points at the cost of rather a lot of platinum. Just in the last week or so, the trader's sell price for ectos has dropped from 8.5k to 7k, and I'm fairly certain it's due to people selling their ecto at the trader in order to get right back into playing Nine Rings after they've run out of gold and tickets.
So... if there are events like this in GW2 they will probably be great times to buy gems.![]()
OH wow this is cool, some things that I didn't even know about that was in beta

Tear it up, ArenaNet; tear it up.
The bags stuff came from gw2db.com. Probably shoulda mentioned that in the article. Really must proofread stuff better ~_~; if you haven't checked the db site out, it's pretty darned cool!
Um, I thought that bag stuff was ingame. . Cus I remember seeing them in game first not on the database, really not understanding what the database has to do with anything since its just a collection of ingame data? The bag info is on the official wiki also.

That's where I first got pointed to for the info (by someone on the gw2 redditt) and pulled my references from for the articleObviously beta servers had already been down 48hrs by the time I wrote it -- which is why it got into the article :D
Hadn't seen that the wiki page had been updated, thanks for pointing that out! It can be a bit slow sometimes -- user generated content and all that!
ohh that was your article!, was pretty well done, yea I really don't think there is a need to give credit to Guru lol.
Oh duh! I keep forgetting than my username isn't Demajen on here >_< For some reason it wasn't available when I signed up to rant about ffxiv 18 months ago :D
I had quite a few "omg. Really?!" moments when reading about stuff I missed in beta. Those were just the icing on a "man this game is so involving and well thought through" cake.
Mmmm cake!
damn, pre-ordered and was so excited to try out the beta, then no beta event planned =\
Guess the jokes on me
Yeah, the next beta weekend hasn't been announced yet.
well, I guess I gotta get the pre-purchase then :/
So no idea if this was posted anywhere, but I missed it as it was published during the BWE.

Basically, new events are gonna be continuously, seamlessly added to the existing game world post launch alongside the existing events. In 3 years, Queensdale might have triple the amount of DEs, and the frequency of existing ones would be lowered to accommodate these new ones happening. I'm very excited now to see an actual living breathing world take shape.
