I think it was a bad choice to go for "whimsical" instead of gaining the little bit of sex-appeal from designing a more mature/traditional elf-looking race.
Here is an amazing thread for guild wars 2 info.

I just hope they can bring all of this to life. On paper, FF14 looked like it would be incredible yet we see where it stands. GW2 has a lot of amazing looking info about it but the actual implementation remains to be seen. I like most of it but I don't like the idea of not having a 'defined' class because that, to me, sounds like enough reason for people to not work together (maybe I'm wrong). I hope the gear is able to handle this type of 'freedom' because some of my most fun in MMO gaming is designing my class and gearing/gemming/enchanting/whatever the gear how I want. I wish WoW were more liberal in this matter but it's a decent design imo. Time will tell, though.
EDIT: After reading further, it looks to be amazing. I just hope they can deliver.
In terms of just pure substance, I think GW2 has the most overall to offer of any MMO on the horizen (TOR, TERA, etc.). The other options are great as well. TERA has a completely different combat system, and TOR has the Star Wars universe to take part in. Being pvp-centric, I was sold at this:
You can also take part in hot-joinable pick-up play just like any FPS game which allows you or a group of people to join a game from a server list so you decide exactly what type of PvP you wish to play. Team sizes for hot-joinable can be larger than 5v5 based on the gameplay type.
My Aion friends are hyped for TERA, but I'm not so much. GW2 has nice art direction and the graphics are good for what it's doing. The UI is amazing. I like the aesthetic sensibilities presented thus far. And if it lives up to it's promises, I'd say it has way more variety in gameplay.
The politics, action-combat, graphics of TERA is a draw-in but with so many MMOs coming out + school; I'd pick GW2 over the others (although I preordered TOR). It seems like the kind of game where you wouldn't have to live at your PC to get anywhere and you can log-in, PVP (fun), log-out. Simple. I don't wana turn into a crackhead again like I did with FFXI, and to a lesser extent, Aion.
I'm actually surprised your interest comes from your PvP background because didn't they say that they're not really putting a big focus on PvP and it won't be that important? Or am I remembering wrong here.
Not sure what you mean by not having a "defined class" as there are definitely specializations between the different professions shown. They're even doing away with subjobs in order to keep them differentiated.
What I think they're trying a lot more to do is make every class self-reiiant, yet complementary to other classes. The game (or at least the main story) is supposed to be soloable, if you want, but have little reason not to work with others if the occasion arises.
Builds are a big part of GW1, so maybe Arenanet is just trying to present thing as being similarly flexible.
Gear, I dunno. GW1 kept things on a very even playing field. If that's any indication you'll probably be able to use whatever you like the look of (for your class) and graft the stats on. The downside, in a sense, winds up being that all you're really getting from endgame type stuff is appearance mods. Though, that's nice if you're just concerned with playing the game and not grinding/farming as to not be gimp.
Maybe they just don't want to hype it up and have people lose sight of the story/etc that GW2 has. GW1 has a lot of PvE content too, with lots of great art/music/etc crammed into it...but the PvP seemed to overshadow it at launch. At least to me. Maybe it's an indication of what the majority of GW1 players chose to do as well.I'm actually surprised your interest comes from your PvP background because didn't they say that they're not really putting a big focus on PvP and it won't be that important? Or am I remembering wrong here.
With all the info out there I am surprised by that statement lol, the name of the game is Guild Wars
PvP will be huge and has been, even in the first guild wars. The fact that they are partnering with ESL for gamescom and streaming matches live, says alot. It is being pushed as an electronic sport. They are catering to every type of online gamer out there.
Eric Flannum: PvP and tournament play are extremely important to us.
Ryan Scott: GW1 has a legacy of having strong PvP and competition, and we’re going to great lengths to make GW2 the best PvP MMO on the market by leaps and bounds.
Jonathan Sharp: We’re definitely thinking about being an e-sport, that’s something we’re really focused on. We haven’t released all of the details for that stuff yet, but we can definitely say that is one of our goals.
the outcome of WvWvW actually affects server bonuses like drop rates and xp increases etc. I would say its important. large scale world vs world and 5vs5 tournament, are the main 2 types being pushed
Well, gear is important but for me, it has never been the driving force. The 'big kills' and 'epicness' of killing a dragon or a giant boss is what I love about MMOs (when in a large group 10+ members). The loot is just icing on the cake for me. In regards to the classes, I prefer class interdependency where people have defined roles that benefit from grouping. If they encourage grouping from the start, it may not matter as you'll do what it takes to help the group.
I totally understand where you are coming from with the ideal of defined roles, but this is the main thing they are trying to change. you can encourage grouping without defined roles since every profession can in some way can fill these roles at any given time. The thing that they are changing is that in a given encounter be it a huge over world boss or a 5 man dungeon run, you are not fixed to a particular role you adapt in the middle of battle (think of it like the paradigm system from FF13 but not). Every single member in your party if doing dungeons or every person in the over world fighting in an event or boss, has the ability to control, heal and damage, effectively. the difference is is that each profession does this in different ways hence varying play styles.
Play the class you wana play cus its fun, play with people you want to play with, not because you have to.
GW2 has some of the best races I have seen in a mmo. I like the new Sylvari. It feels slightly over-designed, but if its as customizable as they are making it seem then I love it
Problem with FFXIV wasn't necessarily that it tried to be different, but that it tried to be TOO different and didn't incorporate anything good from previous MMOs. Arenanet seems to be taking the things that people like about previous mmos, but changing the things that people have been complaining about for years. Notably more diverse and action oriented combat, no trinity, incentive to work together with other players in the world, etc.
I have a KTERA account, and honestly I'm not interested in it at all. The game looks amazing, and the combat is kind of interesting. But it's still your average linear, tedious quest grind MMO. I don't speak a bit of Korean, and was still easy enough to figure out go kill 10 of x or gather 5 of y.I think I'm the only one that thinks TERA doesn't look that great lol. From what I've seen the combat looks kinda bleh. Reminds me of WAR as far as the characters movement looks. When people got at a certain distance they all started to look like game and watch.
I don't think they've said they weren't focusing on it, I think they just weren't ready to talk a lot about it yet. WvW PvP sounds fucking epic.I'm actually surprised your interest comes from your PvP background because didn't they say that they're not really putting a big focus on PvP and it won't be that important? Or am I remembering wrong here.
Yeah, they've actually designed the game around working with others. They won't have the trinity, which means you're not always going to have the designated tank or healer classes, but rather everyone will have to work together and contribute equally to be successful. But each class will still be unique in what they can do. Even if some classes may use the same weapons, each class will have different abilities than the other regardless if the weapon is the same or not. Also, class combo skills which look amazing. EX: an Elementalist can lay down a wall of fire, and then a ranger can shoot arrows through it and they'll catch on fire and do fire damage, or a warrior can go up to it and swing their axes around and send fireballs flying everywhere.
Also the content itself is designed to be soloable but is not preferred. So your PvE leveling will come mainly from dynamic events, which means you'll almost always be around other people doing the same event. Content will scale in comparison to the amount of people participating as well as the rewards. So you can solo fine, but generally you're going to want a lot of people around for the extra challenge and better rewards.
since there is no claiming of mobs, no player target-able skills, I guess there really is no "solo" game play lol. since even dynamic events are really like one big group event, even if you dont group up. its so weird to think in that aspect. many of us have a hard time grasping the idea. lol
