My friend played GW1 forever and still does. From what he was telling me PVP is purely skill based. You can wear epic shirt of epicness +10 and it won't help you in PVP. In my mind, this is the best thing you can do. Once PVP because gear based it loses it's luster and skill means nothing. But if the stats are removed and all the same moves to the same damage to the same people, then it because about who can play better.
Well, gear in that game has very standard stats. The epic shirt of epicness +10 will have the same base stats as common gear, and be subject to the same upgrades. It'll just look cooler. It really goes the same for PvE. The main difference is that PvE you need to do things per-character, such as learn skills, whereas you can use anything you've unlocked on the account for PvP (including paying real money to unlock all the skills for an expansion).
It's a more skill based game in general though.
Restarted as a sin last night since I was told rangers aren't very good. Also heard sins are the best solo farm class. Hopefully it won't take too long to catch up to where my ranger was. Should be easier overall to finish hom with a sin I think so it'll be worth it in the long run.
I don't know where this came from, who made it, or if its even accurate but its amazing.

Im at 21/50 Im pretty content with that. Pretty hard to go back and play through everything. Havent really played seriously for a couple years lol
Yea that tool is awesome, been posted a few times before iirc.
I have done everything in game with a ranger, including campaigns, HM and vanquish; most of it solo (with H&H I mean). Sin is good & a lot of fun imo, feel free to try it. But for farming you can use ritualist skills as any class for a fairly good solo farm build (spirit spam). And some farm runs can only be done as ranger (like farming destroyer cores in Glint's). But I'd say just play what you like, doesn't matter much.
Upgrading your hero armor is probably the easiest to do; though, drop rates can be stingy at times, and some people hate the "pac-man" worm dungeon.
Doing Glint's challenge for EotN hero armor is really easy with a panic and ineptitude Mesmer; it also has a 100% drop rate on the upgrade item. If you can beat the first wave, the rest is pretty simple.
Playing through prophecies and just got to the part where Ascalon is destroyed and now I feel completely overwhelmed with what to do. @_@ Level 6 Monk/Mesmer, any tips or just continue with the storyline quests and everything will be explained and sorted out as I go?
get to 20 asap, makes shit cake. shoulda started in cantha tbh so much easier there.
Alright people, maybe ya overlooked it because it's REALLY far back in the thread.
My in-game name in Guild Wars is Cadwallen Anueryn. There's a guild comprised
of myself ("Dragir") and "Evilmanta" from the Fairy server and some of his old friends
from the Catalyst linkshell from time to time waiting for any of you who're interested in
playing the game with other people coming from FFXI.
He and I will be more than happy to help whenever we can with any early missions/etc.
Just add me to your Friend List and/or send me a PM here on the forums. The "guild"
isn't incredibly lively, but it is a way to stay connected.
Glad to see so many of you are willing to give GW1 a try. It got a bad wrap for being
largely about PVP exclusively and that is just not the case.
Seeya in Tyria.
Oh! ...and on the subject of Guild Wars being largely PVP-centric, here is
a lengthy and excellent example of Guild Wars' depth and quality of lore.
There are, technically, spoilers *gasp* involved here as it does go very
in-depth regarding many of the game's predominant stories. There's an
entire series of them if this one catches your interest.
However, if you intend to play through the game's story and discover its
world's secrets on your own, do not watch the video.
Otherwise, enjoy.
Spoiler: show
Don't panic! :D This should help:

Don't scroll too far down on that last link though (kinda spoilers where you will go on the continent), but basically it has a list of all missions and some "primary quests" that are needed to advance to the next mission. The missions are the numbered ones, the ones between without a number are primary quests that need to be done to advance to the next mission. Clicking on any title gives a walk-through. You can basically keep following that list and do any optional quests as you like (I would recommend doing the ones that reward Skills at least). Once you reach Lion's Arch you can unlock other campaigns and go there for faster leveling, max armor, heroes etc.
