Excitement Overwhelming![]()
Did they talk much about the variety of items available? I did look up on the wiki about item sources and the different types, but when I played GW1, I felt that almost everything I looted was very similar to something I already had. In that sense, I didn't get the sense of progression and gradually lost interest altogether.
If you are looking for stat progression then yea sorry its gonna be like guild wars somewhat. Its not like FF11 or wow in that you gonna grind your ass of for that one extra stat. You will most likely at level cap be able to even buy and craft max stat gear like everyone else. Of course with the horizontal progression you will have gear catered to certain builds, so you will have different weapons and equipment of the same type. You do not always need better stats to make you feel like you are progressing. But GW2 will have much more stat differences than GW1. Also much more unique skins that you will have to work to obtain. This plus upgrade components, slotting crests that give any set of gear you want set bonuses totally makes up for it.
I actually found this way, collecting gear was much more fun, as you can mix and match any pieces you want and have the stats you need on them. In a game where player skill means more than a number on a piece of gear it works well. like in GW1 I had 2 masks of the same type that I liked one for domination and one for illusion builds. Stuff like that.
If it's like GW1, then instead of grinding your ass off for one extra stat you'll be grinding your ass off to look awesome-r.
Stop posting in this thread with information that does not include a release date. I hate you all.

Preview weekends in March & April.
^what he said. I honestly wonder if they didn't wait until the 'year of the dragon' on purpose. Also worth mentioning is that PAX East 2012 (ArenaNet's favored conference/expo) begins April 6th. I wonder if the first open beta testing will be connected to the servers at that event... knowing ArenaNet, they will be. Should be fun...
Welcome to the Year of the Dragon
Today is Lunar New Year’s Day, and according to the Asian zodiac system, the first day of the Year of the Dragon. It’s an auspicious omen for all of us at ArenaNet, as we get ready to make this our own Year of the Dragon.
According to tradition, the dragon embodies passion, independence, and ambition. We think it’s a perfect analogy for what we’re trying to accomplish with Guild Wars 2. We’re a company full of MMO and RPG fans, and we’ve set out to fundamentally rethink how you deliver an RPG experience online. So this year, the Year of the Dragon, let’s usher out old thinking – the tired old quest model, stiff repetitive combat, and monthly fees – and usher in the new.
Guild Wars 2 has captured the imagination of gamers and media all over the world with its action-oriented combat, its living world full of dynamic events, its highly personalized role-playing experience, and the handcrafted artistry that suffuses every element of the game. Last year, thousands of you joined us at shows and events all over the world to try Guild Wars 2 for yourself. This year, you’ll finally be able to immerse yourself in the vast, diverse world of Tyria.
We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.
So stay tuned to our official Guild Wars 2 website, our Facebook page, and this blog for more information about how to participate in an upcoming beta event.
It’s been an incredible adventure over the past five years, working with our community and our team of dedicated artists, designers, and programmers to realize this vision. This year, the seeds of that work come to fruition. We can’t wait to play the game with you.
So welcome to the Year of the Dragon – the year of Guild Wars 2.

Photo that's been around for awhile. That's inside ArenaNets building. Kinda makes you wonder...
I don't think a company would hold back a release that'd start money rolling in for a marketing gimmick. I think it's much more likely that the game is being releases as soon as it is finished and they decided to use the year of the dragon because the game happens to be on track to be released in 2012.
Can't wait for an actual release date D;
They've talked about how they don't want players to get a hold of the game until the sucker is pretty much ready to go. And when they do, release is right around the corner.![]()
