    I'm with him.

Played GW2 at PAX 2010 and 2011. Sure it may have been only for a couple hours each year, but I really only need 15minutes to realize this would be my sole MMO fix for years to come. I can't describe how epic it feels to join in a large dynamic event, like against the mini-dragons, with at least 30+ people on your screen. Just the fact I can just go out into the open world and do whatever I want whenever I want is just...sensible.

When people who haven't tried it yet get a chance to, they'll finally understand what the hype is all about.

I think my vehement distaste for TOR stems from the fact that it took so fucking long for that game to come out and then it turns out that they did abso-fucking-lutely nothing original with it? That's not even fucking acceptable from a development standpoint. Also the difference between the hype for TOR and GW2 is TOR was using the Star Wars logo as a rocket booster to garner hype because even people that don't like MMOs couldn't wait to become a Jedi or Sith. GW2 has no such crutch to lean on, they have to put up or shut up and they are very much putting up with the gameplay footage, the demos, and the in depth Q&As.

In my original post I also made sure to say "how what GW2 promises to be is so much better than anything that is on the market." Not, GW2 will be etc. As far as I remember TOR never even claimed to try any ground breaking things. Aside from maybe the companion thing? Iunno, they're whole hype campaign was focused so much on the VA and storylines and they even failed to deliver on those fronts. Which should say how little they tried to innovate with the things they didn't try to hype.

Well let's just hope the masses feel the same way as you guys then. With tera basically falling off the mmo radar for the year (again), this game has a wide open market to snatch players from should they launch around the middle of the year. There's no other super-hyped games in the pipe that players are gravitating too right now so if this delivers, it's gonna steal the show for a good long while.

Looking forward to trying it out. Never played the first guild wars but never heard anything bad about it either. I'll tip my hat to them if they really present dynamic content in a way that blows my mind. I'd welcome that in today's mmo clone war.

Yeah like Grey said this game can easily steal the show for some time (and it seems from many people that have played the game; most have praised it in many areas). Blade & Soul and Archeage and Phantasy Star Online 2 probably won't be coming to U.S. shores till 4th quarter 2013 at the earliest. Many are going to try Diablo III but I think only a few are going to give up on MMORPG games completely for it. Most of us are probably going to be playing it side by side with our favorite MMO. If for some reason TERA Online does get a temporary injunction, then that would mean Guild Wars 2 would have literally zero new competition for 2012 and most, if not all of 2013 (as far as AAA MMORPG and/or really hyped up MMORPG goes).

I wouldn't be surprised if under the works they already have an expansion being made. If the game sells like hotcakes and gets rave reviews from both game industry magazines/websites and more importantly from the players, then forget it. They could easily put all that cash and rev up an expansion sooner than anticipated and coast on from there.

I don't think GW2 will have any competition even if those games launch. No monthly fee and a skill based 3 faction PVP system pretty much has it in it's own category.

Precisely, never considered this game competing with anyone else.. even if they tout it's a real MMO. Magical things need to happen for it to be in direct competition with the rest.

They have to compete as they make money from microtransactions and most importantly, selling those expansion boxes. They need to keep people playing, and paying for those little things and costumes and the like.

I don't think they'll have a problem selling expansions, and I highly doubt their business model is relying on microtransactions for a reliable source of income. Anet seems a LOT smarter than that.

We know there will be transmutation stones to change your characters appearance. I believe those are confirmed to be only purchasable with real currency. There was also one rumour going around from the closed beta that the shops had experience scrolls in them too, but this ones not confirmed.

Just ArenaNet selling skins and cosmetic items will be a money tree. I think I've spent about $200 so far on LoL

GW1 they sold Costumes, more or less. They've said that's the plan for GW2. So just cosmetic things.

Like GW1 it will be alot of cosmetic stuff.

Character slots, storage, transmutation stones for skinning gear, costume packs, I also think add ons like extra dungeons are also possible.

Are costumes just cool looking clothes or something that lets you alter stat gear?

Just looking at the current GW items in the NCSoft store, you could buy everything from "full sets" of abilities, Character changes (renames, plastic surgery, etc), Costumes, as well as PvP characters. Also we live in a WoW world where we could make "max" characters per server but most other games, GW included do not let you make that many characters for free. XI charged a buck a month for each one, but GW gave you 2 free slots with each "expansion" and you could purchase an extra slot for a fee.

I think we will see a more expanded Store than we have for Aion and GW1. As long as we dont see Buy2Win BS in there the store will be fine.

My earlier statement was more about the person who said they dont need to compete, which is untrue. If the game doesnt try to compete then they dont sell anything in the store.

The store was more of a compliment in GW1 anyway. The fluff stuff was nice if you were hardcore into the game I guess (never touched it myself), but I'd imagine their main revenue was in the new expansions. Instead of paying a subscription, you basically just buy new/frequent expansions for $50/pop (irrc). The first expansion for GW1 took exactly one year, the second took six months and the third took somewhere in between.

The ability sets are for PVP characters only iirc.

I'm not worried about them competing anyways. GW1 did very well for what it was and I can only see GW2 doing better.

Its all in how the company's goals are set up. XI did extremely well for itself because SE had very reasonable expectations. Aion, Warhammer, Conan, and Rift all had unreasonable expectations because their investors saw what WoW had done and thought they could take a significant portion of their millions of customers. What they all got was significantly less than what XI had for years. GW2 should sell their million copies in 3 months or so, but is that enough to meet NCSoft's financial goals.

It will also need to be seen how long expansion boxes take to push out. I think WoW's recent history has proven that 6 months for new content is quite a lot to ask of players.

Costumes are just that costumes. you wear it over your normal gear. In GW2 you will have what they call town gear which has no stats, or battle usable stats. stuff like holiday clothes etc. transmutation stones are the things that allow you to take skins you like and apply it to your stat gear.
