I'm honestly quite liking the voice acting. They all fit the characters perfectly (so far), and the dialogue has yet to grate on me, but perhaps it's just too early. ;/

Anyways, loving the game so far, although I wish they beefed up the engine some, as it has all the same damn flaws as GTA4 did, especially as far as aliasing and building pop-in is concerned.
(which is stupid in a game as sparse as this)

Is there a camera option when riding something btw? I find the default view is far too out for my tastes.

Only real complaint I have at this point is that all of the mini games make me fear for my ps3's life with the non-stop disc usage spam that goes on during them.

Also cheating at poker is downright fucking impossible.

I'm probably going to get shat on for saying this, but I liked GTA4 a little better.

I would say they're equal in terms of "must-have-ness".



It's weird because on the one hand, I'm a car guy, so that kind of makes sense. On the flipside, I'm also a horse person and into westerns... The fact that the horses feel like GTA car controls adapted for horses (gee I wonder why) is probably the biggest thing that holds me back from preferring RDR to GTA. Like... my horse has brakes. And not like anti-lock breaks that are just enough to keep from flinging me over the top. Full on brakes that are like equivalent to putting big fat weights on its legs when I wanna slow down.


Of course, I haven't touched multiplayer yet. So take this as the entirely one-sided single player view that it is.

i love the voice acting too i dont know why people are hating on it. the dialogue is fun to listen to in the cutscenes and stuff. as for the scale, i give this game a must-have 100. the single player is more than satisfying and gunning down lawmen with all your friends on free roam is awesome

Oh, and yeah I didn't put a number, but on just the must-have quality, I'd basically give RDR a 99 and GTA4 a 100.

You buy the suit at the tailor in thieves landing.

Wear it to go play poker.

Each time you deal, you can "cheat" by pressing triangle to pull the bottom card off the deck and stash it in your suit.

From then on that card pops up on the side of the screen every hand, and you can press triangle again to replace one of your cards with it.


What makes it fucking impossible is that both as you pull the card in the first place, and again when you swap them out, it pops up a meter which you can't allow to stay "in the red" for more than like a millisecond...

Which starts way the fuck off in the red and is super slow reacting when you try to stop it from swinging past the center and into the red on the other side.


Basically, I tried it dozens and dozens of times, only once was I able to actually get the card off the deck without getting caught, and got busted terribly when I tried to actually use that card.

I don't find cheating in poker hard at all. First couple of times I sucked at it, but I can get it almost every time now. Last game of poker I played I cheated five or six different times before I ran out of chips. I find learning when to call it quits and not play until you bust the harder part <_<

But uh... how you have the problem I do not know, lol. The poker players are fucking terrrrrrible. One game I goofed off terribly and got to the point where I had 16 chips and the other guy had 734. I won, lol.


I used to play poker for a (minimum wage level) living, and the AI in Red Dead is like they went to all the 5/10/25 cent tables and found the worst players they possibly could to model them after lol.

They never bluff. It kind of makes it a pain the ass to bust all players out because the AI is so conservative.

I literally haven't had a game where I *didn't* bust the table as a whole, and I've only seen other people get knocked out by each other once or twice. (disregarding getting caught cheating, of course)


Best advice I can give is that it's all about how you play pre-flop, and never assuming you have the best hand unless you have the nuts.


Nuts here meaning the best hand possible given what's on the table, in case anyone doesn't know the term >.>


But even then, it's pretty easy to tell rather they have a good hand or a great hand and make judgment if you don't want to play so conservative.

Saying that I'm bad at poker would be the understatement of the century. Last time and only time I played was close to 12 years ago when I was 11; haven't retained much from it. The only winning hands I know are pair, two pair, three of a kind and full house (only know what a full house is from yahtzee). I know there's a flush, but I have no idea how to get it or what the fuck it beats/loses to. I pretty much play for a high pair or use my cheat to try for two pairs and pray from there.

Oh, and to be fair I should reveal this, since I suppose it's something people that haven't taken advantage of idiots for money on poker sites might not notice so readily:


They have a *MAJOR* issue with reraises and not being able to get off their hands, especially if you check raise.


Basically to bust people out, you're right, you're never going to catch someone bluffing. So, here's what you want to do:

Wait. And wait. And wait. Eventually, you'll end up in a situation where you can tell that they've got a good hand, but yours is even better.

Check.

They raise.

Reraise them.

They will reraise pretty much *every* time, unless you go for some absurd amount all at once.

So you reraise a moderate amount... and they'll raise you again. Then you do it again, and after a couple raises/reraises you'll get them all in while you're sitting on the best hand.


For an example, let's say you start with pocket 8's, and the pre-flop action is decen.

Flop comes down A,K,8, no matching suits. An experienced poker player is going to know exactly what I'm saying as soon as I've even said this.

There's a very high likelihood that at least one person is going to have a pair of Aces, or Kings, or even both. Good chance here for you to clean them out with your 3 of a kind, and there's no worries of a flush draw, and extremely slim chance of a straight.

So what do you do?

You check.


The person with the pair then bets, let's say 8 chips.

Comes back to you, you raise to 16.

AI is retarded, so it comes back with a raise to 30. You raise to 60, it goes to 90, etc. until you're both all in.

Ta-da, cleaned out due to AI retardation with no need for anything except waiting on a good hand.

Anyone have an idea on how long it takes for a certain group of animals to respawn in an area? Killed 4 wolves with my knife in hennigan's stead and I need one more for the challenge. Can't seem to find another for anything. Tried tons of bait and that didn't help. Even tried tying up one of those "Oh noo my wagon broke down, help me mista" bitches then putting bait down on top of her...Nothing.
