    INFO BLITZ

I can't quote everything, but there is one little bit that's a bit of a bombshell for you serious shooters.

So which one is better? As far as DUST 514 is concerned, it doesn't matter since you can use either of them. Yes, that's right. After sending away some emails asking for answers to important questions
I was informed by CCP that the keyboard and mouse will have full support in DUST 514 on PS3.

For anyone interested in the game but doesn't know anything about EVE, I just spent the past couple weeks trying to get as familiar with it as I am with FFXI, and good god.
If the FPS is even a quarter as developed as the MMO, it's going to make Borderlands skill sets/weapon mods look like tinkertoys. I really have to recommend reading up if you want to go at this game seriously.

    Update on the cost status.
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...nload-and-play

    NO COMPULSORY PAYMENTS!

Eurogamer can megaphone that Dust 514, the exclusive PS3 MMOFPS that will exist within Eve Online, will now be free to download and free to play. There was going to be a $10 to $20 cover charge for the game on PSN, but that has now been scrapped.
"It was a relatively confusing proposition," executive producer Brandon Laurino explained to Eurogamer, "and we wanted to make it unambiguous that this is a free-to-play game."
CCP intended to convert that original cover charge to in-game Aurum credits for you to spend at the micro-transaction store. "And we probably will still have some kind of pack like that," Laurino added. This will be Starter Pack-like offer, but won't be necessary to play Dust 514.
"It's very important as we take steps into this topic to unambiguously state that it is not a pay to win game," Laurino pressed on. "There is no micro-transaction that you can do that gives you an unfair advantage over someone who hasn't paid anything. It's the classic micro-transaction dynamic of, 'I can pay and get this item,' or, 'I can invest my time and get this item.' But neither of those options will give me an unfair advantage over the other."

Dust 514 Aurum credits can be bought in currency bundles that range from $1, $2 or $10 up to $20, $50 or $100. You'll also be able to earn and use ISK credits, as in Eve Online. ISK credits cannot be bought with real money. AUR credits credits can only be bought with real money. Some items will be exclusive to a currency type, although no examples were given.
Items available include vanity goods to customise appearances with; boosters that save time, such as double skill point (SP) boosters; variants of weapons that aren't necessarily more powerful - "side-grades" that look or play differently; services like character respecs; and lucky dip treasure boxes. "It's what has emerged as best practice," Laurino said.

"We already have hundreds upon hundreds [of micro-transaction items]. We have a cache of nearly a thousand different things at this point," he revealed. "Whether or not we expose them day-one is something we're still sorting out. It's like when you make a TV show: you shoot all the episodes in advance, but you don't put them all out on the first day of airing, right?"
Extra maps don't sound like they'll be among those items.
"It's not the classical, 'We're going to have four maps at launch...' We are covering literally a universe of planets, so there's thousands of different maps and they're all available to everyone who's playing," Laurino revealed.
"There won't be some section of the universe that's blocked off. It's really about what you build on those planets - some of those will be earned, some of those will be paid. Again, none will give an unfair advantage, but may have a unique look, or a certain tweak or side-grade."
The price of items can start as low as "a penny sort of value". How high they can go Laurino wouldn't say - mentioning only the bundled currency packs. But "nothing is off the table" in terms of item price limit and what Sony will allow, we were told. And there's a "gigantic range".

Cool, f2p. Guess there is no reason not to try it at least, even if I have no idea what the hell this game is exactly.

I haven't really been following DUST 514, but I did see the intro they had at E3 like forever ago. I'm kinda disappointed in what they've shown, I don't know if Gametrailers just sucks or if the game graphically looks that bad. Maybe i'm just spoiled.

    New Dev blog too:

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/...aracteristics/

It's nice to see a lot of the similarities and concepts from EVE carry over.

I do QQ however when I see comments like this:

Possibly one of the most confusing and complex games ever created? going to be a total headache learning how to play, if it wasn’t free i probably wouldn’t of bothered.

So it's.....an open beta? Will definitely give it a try during that period, this has been in the works for such awhile.

It's not clear yet if it's an open beta like Starhawk is right now, or will be large but still with invites, just more access than right now.
I guess I'm making a fine distinction between a beta where anybody can walk in (which is fairly new, to the past few years), and the classic "public beta" where members of the public can finally sign up, and some get to play.

Also, here's a screen by screen examination of the gameplay footage.

Well, considering CCP has worked out a deal with Sony that lets them patch the game like they do with EVE, you'll likely see improvements.
"But wait", you say, "PS3 is static hardware, how could they improve it? EVE may have gotten a graphics overhaul in 2007, but that was with changes in PC hardware."

Optimization, get more with what you have.
Look at QD's Kara, the limits of the hardware are only just being hit, it's just a question of how much devs are willing to work for it, and CCP, well...
    http://community.eveonline.com/devbl...blog&nbid=2307
Look at that! CCP doesn't spaghetti code, and they're always looking to make things run better, not lazy at all. Between how they iterate and optimize, if the game doesn't fall flat, I wouldn't be surprised if down the line they do a graphics patch, or hell, just update the thing to run on whatever the PS4 is.

I learned pretty quickly while I was looking into this stuff, that CCP is basically the exact opposite of SE in terms of getting shit done.

I thought Hilmar said "10s of thousands" when he was referring to the open beta.

There was a Q&A in-game on EVE just now, linky http://www.dust514base.com/2012/03/i...q-session.html
It's mostly regarding EVE<->DUST interaction, and there's a ton of "can't say yet because fanfest/upcomming devblog" (10 more days to more epic infodumps), but still some tidbits. And the can't say often comes out as a confirmation that yes, they are working on it.

ISD AeolusWind > Ashra Tesh asks: The devblogs reveal dropships with cloaking devices. Will players be able to fit cloaks on their dropsuits as well, or is it simply for specialized vehicles?
CCP Wolfman > There is an infantry claoking module on the raodmap, I'm really looking forward to that one
CCP Wolfman > although I'll probably regret it
CCP Wolfman > when I keep getting stabbed to death by cloaked scouts
ISD Athechu > Kiyl asks: Will the DUST rules be as nonexistant as they are in EVE?
CCP Wolfman > The rules will depend on which security level you play in
CCP Wolfman > so you can expose yourself as much or as little as you like
CCP Wolfman > of course nothing is going to stop you getting shot

Quote Originally Posted by Synbios View Post

More exact statement, looks like it'll be a traditional beta.
ISD AeolusWind > First question, and one I believe lots of players are interested in: Ryuki Kado > When will this game be released?
CCP Cmdr Wang > Beta will start IN April, and then we will slowly let more people in
CCP Nothin > Well, the beta is already up, but we'll be expanding it in April

I leave for Iceland in a week. So pumped to try this out. I'm glad to hear that infantry will have cloaking. As someone who is part of a clandestine corp this will definitely be abused by us.

So, a quick rundown on the important new bits from the four panels DUST made an appearance on.

While much is made of the contracts from EVE players to get DUST players for operations, there are NPC contracts that serve the purpose of quick jump in matches (matchmaking?). It's also the equivalent of EVE's hi-sec areas, you'll never have to worry about eating an orbital strike in those. Also, share of contract reward money will seem to take participation into account.
While you lose copies of equipment when you die, there is a 'civilian' version for many (all?) classes of equipment that are infinite, and this is what any noob poping into the game will be fitted with. If you just want a shooter to jump in on and apply bullet to face, you are accommodated.

There will be a commander role for people into that kind of thing, not all of it was ready in the build they had there so details were light (Someone compared it to BF3, I'm not familiar with that so maybe someone else can weigh in.). Fog of war, scouting, scanning. Also there are non-damage weapon things, e-war, stasis webifiers to stop vehicles moving (maybe infantry too? a counter to speedy scouts).

Still no exact info on what the division will be between passive skilling (time progression) and active skilling (kills, etc.)
Whatever that is though, your main choice seems to be specialize to go for efficiency and better facekicking really quick, or go wide so you can respawn in fits to respond to specific battlefield conditions.
And still no news on what they'll be selling for cash as a microtransaction income stream, besides that they're anti-"pay to win"

Friendly fire is on, it's EVE, harden the fuck up. Trying to infiltrate enemy clans WILL happen, it's a valid tactic, start getting paranoid of one of your guys team killing you in a mtch because he was a plant from another group to alter a tournament result.

Also, expansion/update stuff in the pipeline.

    2012
. PvE mode (survival/zombie mode vs. drones) [maybe launch, maybe not]
    2013
    . eSport/Arena (more classic CTF/DM modes)
. Non-temperate planets (Gas Giant, Magma. May be vehicle only)
    . MTACs (Mecha suits)

Lastly, welcome to New Eden motherfuckers

EDIT: Oh, also, the size is 24 vs. 24, but they can raise it higher, and likely will as they optimize things further.

    Ok, some new stuff.

A small step by step of what starting off in the game will probably be like.
    http://www.dust514.org/home/item/you...ps-in-dust-514

Also an examination of the skills and market screens
    http://www.dust514.org/home/item/dus...ket-dissection

But the reason for the bump is this
    http://www.dust514.org/home/item/fir...ys-rolling-out
Current state of the beta is pre-fanfest build which is rather old and is used for stress-testing mostly. Sony needs to approve another big patch for DUST 514 and once they do Fanfest attendees and others will be able to get into the beta and start playing newest build of the game. This will happen during the next week or so.
Also here's a random ingame screenshot

It's not seven years of literal 24/7 "grinding" gameplay to earn skills.

EVE uses a passive skilling system. You have five stats, and each skill is associated with a primary and secondary stat.
Your exact stat values for a skill determines how many skill points you earn per minute. And you earn those points no matter what.
Winning, losing, logged on, logged off, or not touching the game for a month (there's an issue with skill queues, but we'll skip that).
That's where they're getting the seven year value.

For a more nitty gritty. Each skill has five levels, the base SP needed to improve is
    0 > 1 - 250
    1 > 2 - 1,164
    2 > 3 - 6,586
    3 > 4 - 37,255
    4 > 5 - 210,745 (For a total of 256,000)
At a non-optimized attribute balance, it would take just under six days to take a skill from 0 to 5. BUT, there's a wrinkle.
Skills also have a rank, from one to sixteen, that is a straight multiplier to the amount of SP needed.
Rank 1 uses the time I quoted to you, but a rank 16 level 5 (only level 5, not counting level 1-4) stage takes about two MONTHS to complete.
But, like I said, you can earn that skill without even logging on.

And keep in mind, while they have said DUST uses passive skilling, these numbers are from EVE, they may tweak things a bit.
