    Sweet, slow death.

Apparently, high-fructose corn syrup is great at inflicting the precursors for diabetes and heart disease when consumed regularly, as it doesn't get digested like most sugars and literally goes straight to one's liver.

If fructose is the enemy, how does Mexican Coke help?

The sugar in HFCS coke is 55% fructose.

The sugar in cane sugar coke is 100% sucrose.

Sucrose is 50% fructose, 50% glucose.

Mexican Coke and regular coke both have 39g of sugar.

Therefore, Mexican Coke has 19.5g of fructose, regular coke has approx. 21.45g.

You aren't dodging the bullet drinking Mexican Coke, sorry to tell ya.

Your friends are probably less active than they used to be. I drink soda somewhat regularly, a lot less than I usually did, but I work that shit out most of the time.

What a shock, Coke is both nasty and bad for you. Who woulda thunk?

I think HFCS is almost as controversial as Global warming.

I loved the HFCS propaganda commercials that the "corn council" of America released a while ago those made me laugh.

HFCS and Cane Sugar (sucrose) are virtually nutritionally identical. If you run into people trying to tell you HFCS is worse for you than cane sugar, they are a liar and you have my permission to punch them in the face.

Proof? Sorry but HFCS is a chemically altered sugar similar to the way that Partially hydrogenated and fully hydrogenated oils are chemically altered oils. When you start chemically altering something your body processes it differently.

I haven't seen any strong evidence on either side of the coin so I am going to err on the side of cautious and avoid HFCS when I can.

The problem isn't the concentration of fructose in high fructose corn syrup. It's that it's been sterically altered, which makes it harder for your body to properly process the way it would normally process sugars.

That's not what this article is saying at all.

Depends, acetylsalicylic acid is still acetylsalicilyc acid whether you make it in a lab or get it from a tree. Fructose is fructose, and glucose is glucose. If they put any other shit in there, that I don't know about. But I was of the opinion that HFCS is just some combination of those two sugars.

Well surcrose and fructose get metabolized differently. Well they both go through glycolysis but fructose enters at a different step than the glucose from sucrose. I remember my biochem prof saying something that fructose induces the production of more adipose tissue(fat) or something like that and how those HFCS commercials were a load of bullshit.

I cook my own food and drink water and green tea almost exclusively. Where's my prize? :D

Now if splenda turns out to be the devil, my tea will have to go unsweetened

Edit: Fructose is sweeter than sucrose, so you need less. That's why it's more expensive to buy

This is true. The steric alteration I was referring to turns 5-ring fructose into 6-ring fructose (due to heating), which results in requiring the same amount in order to get the same sweetness. Fructose is also heavily metabolized by the liver, and anything excess to what the liver can handle (which is very small, since the main enzyme fructokinase is present in small amounts) is deposited directly into fat cells. It also stimulates the breakdown of glucose. This in turn stimulates the the release of insulin, which stimulates fat synthesis.

So yes, consuming High Fructose Corn Syrup (which is 100% Fructose, unlike table sugar which is only 50% Fructose) will make you fat if you consume it in large enough amounts. Unfortunately for Americans (and a growing amount of urbanized nations) it's in just about everything you eat.

Even fucking Ketchup. Who the fuck puts sugar in ketchup? Or bread? Come on now.

The Corn Council is really strong these days. It's unlikely this report will stop the spread of it into basically everything.

You'd be surprised. I know plenty of people who "only drink water and don't drink soda cause it's bad for you" and don't even realize how much of the other stuff they eat everyday has the same HFCS they are trying to dodge from avoiding soda. You really have to be careful with what you buy, and spend the extra time to read labels if you have to.

    The Bitter Truth

This is an interesting sum-up of the metabolism process of carbohydrates by the liver. I suggest watching it if you have about 15 minutes to spend (and can stand the speaker's constant "ok?"). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM#t=43m50s Skip to 0:57:00 if you want to go directly to the fructose part.

This is not new news, just more studies proving that HFCS is just overall bad for you.

Yeah but I do give my friends credit where credit is due and just try to explain to them that they need to start reading the labels of what they buy
