Oh, btw, we won't find alien signals I think... once you start broadcasting your existence, you wake up Cthulhu, and he comes to psychically rape your planet til he tires of making his victims re-live simulated versions of their possible deaths.

Absolutely, AV hit it right on the head. Anytime SETI enters the equation then things tend to get interesting. Speaking of SETI I had the pleasure of hearing and meeting Seth Shostak of SETI speak in person when I was at USC, dude is mad cool.

It is interesting hearing him doubt that Aliens visit Earth and our toxic oxygen cloud all while searching for signals. He pwned this one poor woman who got upset that he had the audacity to say that aliens kidnapping people and flying umpteen trillion light years to carve patterns in corn fields and leave was high unlikely.

    Good times, good times.

You see! This is what Hawking warned us about when we launched Voyager with our home coordinates! WERE DOOMED!

It's projected to reach heliopause in 2015. It's in heliosheath at the moment.

Here is a picture I posted here on BG about a 2 ago in regards to the Voyager spacecraft and its location. We also know because of this that the Universe is completely asymmetrical or "bent" in its shape. Voyager 1 and 2 were launched a few weeks apart and launched in completely separate directions, yet Voyager 2 reached the the termination shock region of space 3 years sooner and being 15 billion miles apart.

    http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...Squashed-2.jpg

On Voyager is mounted a golden plate with Earth history, our location as well as pictures of humans and other forms of fauna and flora that are native to Earth. There are actually voice recorded greetings from every language on Earth on this golden plate in hopes that someone will find it. Stephen Hawking did not like this idea much to say the least when Voyager was launched back in 77ish and still hates the idea.

Miz's 2nd link absolutely astounds me. Technology that can detect a dip in light emission from a faraway star due to a planet crossing in front of it is incredible. I love this stuff. It's stuff like this that makes me want to live to 100+, just to see how far we actually get.

I could have told you that.

Draw a 4 D cone (go ahead, try, I fucking DARE you), now if you remember conical sections from high school geometry, you know that the cut perpendicular to the axis is a sphere.

Indeed, when you look around you, you see what appears to be a series of 3-spheres. They seem to be oriented along a temporal axis, and you can now see how time is perpendicular to space, just as (x,y,z) are perpendicular to each other.

Here's where it gets tricky though, what you see around you isn't a simple 3-sphere, because ANY axis you choose from the origin to the plane along the 4-cone will appear to generate a perpendicular 3-sphere cut.

Yet there should be a unique cut, shouldn't there?

How to get around this? We aren't seeing 3-spheres, they are actually closed 3-balls (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong), and they wrap around themselves like the screen in Asteroids does:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZfsnA7dAHI

The distance from our location to the actual "edges" of the 4-cone influences how severely curved our local 3-space appears, and should nicely account for the voyager deflection.
