Atlus released the first details today behind Etrian Odyssey 3, latest in their series of portable dungeon RPGs and the first new game under that title in nearly two years. The game's due out March 4 in Japan at a price of 6279 yen; no US release has been announced yet. The core staff behind the other Etrian games -- director Shigeo Komori, character designer Yuji Himukai, and music composer Yuzo Koshiro -- is all contributing to the project.
Judging by the first look Atlus presented in this week's issue of Famitsu magazine, the watchword for Etrian 3 is "ocean." The game's set in Armolode, an ancient seaside city which suffered a massive earthquake that leveled downtown and replaced it with a vast labyrinth. People venture into this maze in search of fortune and valuable technology to savage, and now you're getting a chance to join them.
You can expect the usual Etrian-style RPG gameplay here, of course, with one screen showing a 3D view of the Wizardry-style dungeon and the other showing an overhead map that you create and annotate yourself with the touch pen.
Details on what's new are still a little scant, but you'll apparently be able to explore Armolode and the surrounding waters by ship in addition to delving into its dungeons. Character designer Himukai is redrawing all of the character class portraits for this game, and several new classes -- including prince/princess, phalanx, monk, pirate, and shinobi -- are reportedly in the works.
The last Etrian Odyssey game was released in June 2008 in America.

according to gamefaqs, these are the translated descriptions of the new classes:
Princess:
They are the descendants of royal blood. With noble blood of power flowing within them, they have the ability to boost their party's morale.
Phalanx:
Metallic armor covering their whole body characterizes them. With overwhelming defensive power and by wielding spears, offensive and defensive tactics are their strong point.
Monk:
By using the power of the "mind", they possess the ability to heal wounded adventurers. They also excel in the art of unarmed combat.
Pirate:
The pirates' descendants live in the sea. While proficient in the handling of guns and swords, they are also good at tactics to cooperate with comrades to defeat enemies (I'm unsure of this sentence).
Shinobi:
They are users of the arts handed down since ancient times called "ninja arts". They have mastered many techniques aiding in the labyrinth's exploration.
so basically, Troubador, Protector, new class, new class, Survivalist. although I'm sure the repetition won't be that bad once we get to check out the actual classes and their skills.
a bit late with this news but I don't see it posted already, and it's good enough news that I thought I'd share. now we begin the waiting game...
