Nah, you don't run a beta test to test if someone can run something, that's what minimum and maximum specs are for. More than likely they will pick the machines they know can run the software, not machines they wonder 'if'. Nobody is saying your machine can't run it, but they aren't going to waste their time inviting someone to a beta who could potentially have issues running the software. Even if you argue this could be the case, the data would be meaningless to them.

Consider the following scenario:

User A has a good PC which they know will run the game.
User B has a bad PC they are unsure will run the game.
User C has a PC which can run the game.

All three users are invited to the 'beta test'.

User A plays.
User B cannot play, he does not participate because his machine cannot handle it.
User C does not play, he does not participate because he chooses not to, despite being invited and depite his machine being capable.

In both the User B and User C cases the information they gather is that User B and User C both failed to play the beta, their corresponding system specs are irrelevant because the end result is the same. It should be obvious they don't run beta tests to test machines, they get your specs so they can determine if inviting you would be a potential waste or not.

As a videogame tester myself, I can tell you this: SE will try to run it on the most PCs they can. They wont prevent themselves from testing it on a bad PC just because they "wonder" if it can run it. The whole point of a tester is to find out with facts what can and cant run the game. My guess is that their minimum range will be a bad PC that could at least run FFXI. It may not work well with FFXIV, but they will try and get the facts, and from there, they can determine what is the minimum requirement.

This is why I said earlier everyone's chances are practically the same, shitty or top-of-the-line. They'll just be more inclined to pick up a few more people that are on-par -> top of the line for early server stress testing.

I don't have much to support this except for reports from previous SE betas, but don't they usually do stress testing as one of the last things to test in a beta? Stress testing is mostly about their server hardware, after they have sorted out the software issues, right?

Right, however since it's very obvious they'll be doing invites on "sets," it's sort of both a stress test, and massive bug-catching of the beta at the same time. Then close to the end of the beta it'll be more stress testing and seeing how new FF/casual players take to the game.

Generally, they'll be inviting all types of computers to see what can run and what can't for a while. Eventually they'll start cutting off the lower end PC players for people that can actually play with a stable connection/card/etc.

FFXIV won't be crazy intensive on on-par PCs of this age, like FFXI was in it's beta time. Esp if they are still using DX9, lol.

Even so... you know how many ppl lied on the app form to increase their chances? I'm sure they know not all the data ppl are filling out will be accurate, so they aren't just going to pick 100% of the top end machines... they might not pick many low end rigs, but I bet they will pick from a range of machines and then focus on on middle/upper end app forms. I know they can actually see your system spec's when your running the game since beta tests run client side programs, but I doubt at that point they are going to be like "you lied, your banned from beta."

I know a lot of ppl have good rig's so no point to lie (like myself), but honestly how many ppl said they would devote 72hrs+ a week to beta testing? loool like seriously?

I put 48-72 hours, dunno if the hours you enter matters >.O

Haha yeah. He was subbing a 40NIN and bloodtanking KB in Adaman Gear (the PLD shit). Back then he was like a hero... looking back at it now.. wow what a fucking n00b. lol

Gigantoad was fun as hell... best part was actually downing the fucker in Gustaberg, then the whole mob of people travelled to Ronfaure to do battle with another Gigantoad... crashing the servers left and right due to having so much activity in the zones was the fucking shit.

Twinkling Treant was fun as shit too. Carby didn't get first but god damn, did we try hard. Everyone was like "OMG OMG OMG MUST WIN PRIZE" in English and Japanese squigglies. Never had seen such madness before in an online MMO.

Omg yeah lol. Midgard almost didn't get Outpost warp cause we just got lazy about killing them after we heard they forgot to turn off invincibility. Eventually people got their shit together and helped out.

Looking forward to seeing more of that in 14. I'm sad they never did huge scale event battles after the Treants. ;/

Yeah man I was expecting more of it Or that other event (Harvest Festival was it?) that had us run through Zilart zones (first time for most!) at lvl 1. That shit was fun too.

SE has learned a lot over the years, despite us bitching at times. Hope they can move the crowd again.

That was summerfest, when it was actually summerfest and not the sunbreeze festival.

I remember they brought it back one year and wasn't nearly as epic since being 75 and been to all those places already.

Really have high hopes for this game, can't wait to get in there.
