Any point taking Alchemy past 60?

    Hey everyone,

I just hit 50 on Alchemy and I am enjoying the craft thus far. I've researched the craft in advance since I started and it does seems to be a consistent money maker with such items as silent oils, sleeping potions, and holy waters thus far. As I approach 60, I am wondering if besides HQ increases, will leveling Alchemy to 100 be worth it for future crafts or is the potential items after 60 alchemy ultimately a waste of time and gil when the more consistently selling alchemy items are made under the 60 cap.

Thanks in advance for any serious advice!

Depending on the prices on your server and your other craft skills, there's a couple decent synths up in the 90-ish range. If you have your smithing sub leveled decently high (I don't), I think the iron/steel bullet market is back to decent levels - I realize that's more of an HQ tier issue, but seriously, on those, it's worth making a point of it. Cursed legs and hands -1 still sell decently well if you don't have retarded 1/40 HQ runs like me.

All in all, I'd say do not level Alchemy if you're just trying to make money...but then again, you won't really lose money, either. I leveled Alchemy so I could be self-sufficient for meds and things, which is nice, but doesn't require leveling over 60 for the most part. It's definitely the least frustrating/easiest craft to get to 100, but that's also the reason it's not a big money maker.

I have 88 Alchemy and every time I see new recipes added for all the other tradeskills (and lolfurnishings or other useless crap no one cares about for Alchemy and <3 poisonous fruit), I wish I had skilled something else.

Don't get me wrong, I made a lot of money off of Echo Drops once I got to the 50% HQ level. The demand for Alchemy goods is rather low compared to the number of Alchemists there are, and the list of "money synths" seems rather short compared to something like Cooking (though, have fun skilling that 95+).

I originally took Alchemy for repairing fishing rods, long before they added Halcyons and synthetic rods were just as good as wooden rods. I also figured I'd never get a Lu's. Now that I have Lu's, I wish I had the skill to fix it so I could fish more things than just Dil and other "safe" fish.

Grass is always greener on the other side, right? I frequently hear "do you know any blacksmiths/goldsmiths/clothcrafters/etc?" but rarely "do you know any alchemists?" because everyone knows at least a few.

    1. Farm light crystals
    2. Load favorite synther
    3. ???
    4. holy water profit

In all seriousness, if you feel like sitting down and synthing tons and tons and tons of holy water, shihei (Fish nebs -> black ink -> shihei), meds as you listed, and other stuff it is a very nice, steady source of income.

Honestly, it's worth the time and gil to take it to 100, to tier holy waters and other meds. I can make a killing farming light crystals/slime oils and synthing them into Waters/Oils. As I'm 73 or so, I don't quite hit the synthing tier and I don't HQ more than maybe 25-33%, sometimes alot less.

It all comes down to your opinion, among other things, how much of a waste leveling alchemy is. It is time consuming, but you can make money off alchemy quite easily, if you know what you are doing. If you are lazy or don't have much play time - this craft will end up breaking you, as will every craft.

On my server there always seems to be a drought of Animal Glue and Sleeping Potions during the week, so digging for bone chips/sleepshrooms and using my alchemy mule to convert them to the above solids provides with some nice pocket change. As you said, the self-sufficiency is more than enough reason to keep going with it. Nice being able to make oil/powder/echo for the cost of basic npc prices.

Ideally, you should check the medicines/alchemy section of your server AH, see what's missing or in low quantities and throw some up when you log in/before you log out. Pretty much sells overnight or while you're out doing what-have-you.

The last few levels are cooking are much easier now. Sweet Rice Cakes will take you to 99, and the price of the required Fresh Majoram is a fraction of what it used to be, since the Chocobo-Hot-and-Cold game was introduced. And while red curry still requires expensive dragon meat, red curry buns reduce your loss and speed up the sale.

if you have a goldsmithing sub or need to level it, alchemy is great around 98 for 1)making panacea and 2) you can make nuggets for cheap and sell either the gold or plat ingots afterwards.

It's very competitive, and lacks a ton of BIG PROFIT HQ's... but Alchemy (and cooking) will always be slow and steady income.

You will need to have the ability to craft none stop to make decent money on this, having it levelled on an alt is great because you can still do stuff. I wouldn't personally level it on a main char because you are tied to large quantities of ingredients, pre synths and synths.

This is true. I'm glad my alchemy is on a mule, she's always full of ingredients waiting for the right price at the guild or the rare item to show up on AH to synth them.

If I was sponsoring Dynamis runs with my Fishing gilz I could have a relic or two by now.

Not to shove in on Toth's topic, but does anyone have a recommended recipe to finish Alchemy to 60? I'm at 56 right now and I've been following Ctownwoody's guide for the most part but he has finishing to 60 on cerment chunks which are fairly slow since mats don't go up to often and it takes 2 of each shard to craft.

I finished yesterday with Hi-Potions. The total cost though is about 1.5k per synth in materials, with only a NPC value of 280ish (AH is 700). Marlboros arent much fun or numerous to hunt for vines though and Amerats aren't much better. You could save some money and kill some scorpions in CN for poison powder synths (2 claws + 1 thunder).

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll bounce around to try to cap it off, because cerment chunks are a bitch. Not really a bad loss all things considered, just a pain in the ass buying 30k a stack of mats that only pop up about once a day.
