Uh, if you've cancelled them you are fine. Just make sure there hasn't been any "odd" charges recently.
I cancelled them within 20 minutes of losing them.
I just get paranoid I guess... (i.e. drunk and stupid)
After you cancel them there is no way they can make a transaction, or get any important information other than your name off it.
Magnetic stripe doesn't contain important info as well.
I managed to lose my card around July in Baltimore of all places where the true events of that show The Wire occured. I called my bank within 4 hours of when it happened, saved all my receipts, and was able to dispute 5 purchases on my statement at the end of the month that occurred within that time frame by calling the businesses and confirming that it wasn't my signature on those receipts.
Make sure you keep your stubs and receipts just in case, and you should be good to go. I don't know how it works for places that don't require you to sign a receipt, but you should be ok if it happened 20 minutes ago. Your card should already be dead.
My little brother got mugged a few months back in Philly. Forgot to cancel one of his cards, and the retard muggers used it over the internet and had shit sent to their own house. called the CC company, the got the info and called the police, and now the jackasses are in jail.
Not always bad to forget to cancel! Although losing it is very different from getting it stolen.
About..a year and a half back, had lunch with a friend at work. Paid with my debit card, waitress brought it back saying it was declined. I knew something was up, so I called the bank, since I knew I currently had funds in the account.
The rep on the phone asked if I had made any recent purchases ($200 at a whole foods store, and $400 at a Foot Action, I believe) in Missouri. Being in TX, and never even visited MO, I became a bit concerned...luckily they cancelled the account after those suspicious transactions already, and I did not have to pay anything.
The rep told me on the phone that sometimes, using an ATM at a privately owned gas station, or the like, can result in your info being stolen. He also mentioned various other methods, such as people with cameras on their glasses snapping a pic of your info if you hold your card out in line...I used the card at a gas station ATM a couple of days earlier though, so figured it was that.
It's just crazy having your card stolen, even though it's still physically in your wallet.......
This is why I try to use cash as much as possible after I lost my card. There's so many ways for people to steal your cards without physically taking them. I used to work as a cashier at a grocery store and could literally memorize people's card numbers based on what bank they were with (Ex: 4108-9400-0534-XXXX for BB&T) and it freaked people out when I had to do card transactions manually when my register would freeze up during peak hours.
Do you guys still sign for stuff from credit/debit cards over there or do you have chip and pin machines yet?
In the US its pretty much PIN for Debit, signature for credit and nothing for insignificant stuff/fast food drivethru.
