I must've missed this somewhere because I don't keep up - what is different from traditional ff style?

These are just common complaints on other boards based on reviews/streams that have been blown out of proportion. I kinda wished people could get a chance to try the game before bashing it-but I haven't heard anything about an English demo.

    Lack of npc, non-encounter towns.
No weapon/item shops (outside of saves. this couples with the last)
    Auto-heal after battles/restart mid-way or at death.
No world-map/airship (this was ditched in X and I honestly liked it).
    Hero-death = loss in battle.
Hero-command input only, AI controlled team (with slight control by the player).

Some of those things make my heart sink a bit. However, I am not worried as I had very similar feelings when I heard/read/found out about XII's game design, and I think that was a masterpiece of a game, and possibly my favorite of the franchise.

Either way, it's going to be real interesting (assuming this is a 7 remake, as we are all speculating still) to see how they render a more classic-style RPG into this generation of console gaming.

Huge world maps, buggies, little broncos, highwinds, chocobos. I feel like a dumbass, but I get excited about the level of detail that could be achieved, visible equipment with visible materia/slots, nex-gen graphical versions of monsters/bosses, limit break animations, Vincent's transformations, seamless transitions between scenes/gameplay. Not to mention extended detail into story, plothole-filling. Given Square-Enix's experience and rather talented writers they have filling their ranks now, it could be made air tight.

I only hope to see the removal or reinvention of retarded enemies like:

If you think about it, this kind of gives you a visual representation of a huge leap in gaming generations. This is taking a very archaic RPG concept and showing it to you HD for the first time.

This is so funny, but it's true. I'm playing FFXII, which has much better graphics, but I can't help but say it looks kind of bad compared to having the cartoon looking FFVII characters. I noticed this when I went from FFVII to FFVIII as well.

I've played and completed FFXIII now and i'd like to say that the complaints are very exaggerated..

lack of npc, non-encounter towns is true, but this is a different game and you're in a different place in this story - you're an enemy of the world, they're not going to want to talk to you much. the auto-talk function is also nice in that NPCs are talking to each other, or out loud instead of to a random stranger. Also, i think the interparty conversations make up for this..

weapon/item shops thing - i think this is kinda convenient seeing as Save points are every-fuking-where.. this also ties in with the nature of the game. It's very linear in the sense that you're being pushed from location to location in the story, unlike in previous FFs where you're free to roam the world and actually look for the damn town. Since you can't move back, it makes sense for the weapon/item shop to come with you.

battle auto-heal / restarts - thank God for these. XIII is NOT easy, especially some of the non-boss encounters. My controller would probably have found its way being flung into my TVs LCD screen by now if this option weren't available.

no world map / airship - when every point along the way to where you're going is a point of interest, this negates the need for a world map. I'd rather see unique scenery than some generic less detailed map of it all. and as for airships, once again, the story style isn't the free-roaming kind.

hero-death = loss in battle - ok i agree this is highly annoying, but when you couple it with the auto-heal / restarts, its no big deal at all, except with certain lengthy fights which i shall not mention here.

leader command input only - is a step away from micro-management in battle and more towards strategizing the flow of battle. the idea is that you really don't need to input every single command in battle, and you'll be glad that you don't considering how fast paced the battles in XIII are (much more than XII and XII needed the gambit system or it woulda been a real pain too).

it IS a very different game, but I wouldn't say the changes are bad. quite a breath of fresh air, to be honest.

    but back to FFVII..

i'm not sure about the rest, but the Dorky Face (3rd mob) has already been re-envisioned in better 3D quality (in Crisis Core) and I think it looks great.

edit: found a pic on ff wiki but quality is bleh

I dunno, going by the awesome facial and body expressions in FFXIII it could work for the remake?

Most of these complaints are from idiots who haven't even played the final game and who get their information from a couple disgruntled 2chan posters. People really need to start developing their own opinions about video games as opposed to just following what a couple of people say.

Spira pretty much nailed it in his reply but the only thing I'll disagree about is the difficulty. I didn't find the main playthrough difficult at all. Often times I found myself holding the PS3 controller in one hand and mashing X while typing and browsing on the computer with my other hand not paying attention to the TV at all. There's a couple of bosses that drop your HP into red but you can easily anticipate the attack and switch to a Healer, Defender, Healer party class and switching back to burst damage to break when it's safe. Shit is cake.

    Spoiler: show
Even King Adamantoise is lol because you can just cheapen the fights with Vanille's Death spell. Some of the later mission bosses are though, however

No towns is a godsend, unless people need towns for "immersion" or whatever the justification is, fine. I for one was glad I didn't have to run through towns sidetracking the story just to speak to some npc or visit a potion shop. Auto heals after battles complaints just deserve a "really?" reply. I don't see how this is a negative in any way. Restart complaints are lol aswell. I guess people consider themselves more hardcore having to run back to bosses to get the same result a restart does, whatever.

People crying over world maps (not this message board) and linearity are absolutely hilarious. Having a sandbox world doesn't make a game not linear. Most everything on world maps is inaccessible till you have the means to access it anyway, which usually occurs near the end of the game (and FFXIII opens up on Chapter 11 aswell). I don't have a party member telling me "You can't go here yet!" in FFXIII. And yeah, I played and finished the game.

Back on topic. As much as I wish FFVII wasn't remade, I'll buy it when it's released anyway, and I'll look forward to it. Apart of me wishes these efforts were being put into newer titles but I have no actual say in it anyway so I'll roll with it. I thought FFVII was an average title having played FFVI before it. The absolute only reason FFVII remains memorable to me was because it was the first FF to use 3D graphics and fully rendered characters on pre-rendered backgrounds.

well i really wouldn't say FFXIII is difficult. its just not easy, in the sense that your normal battle encounters aren't exactly just mash X like with previous FFs.. it really depends on your Optima setup.

and if you were like me and liked to skip entire zones of mobs along the way in the story, you'll feel the hurt at some point. It can be made up with proper use of optimas but then battles will end up taking very long.. and there are some very annoying battles along the way too. it got kind of obvious to me when my 5 stars started dropping to 3 and then 1 on the battles i did do.

this is in addition to the fact that there are no random encounters, so there will be tough and easy monsters on the field, especially in the later areas. most enemies have specific strategies that work towards beating them faster - so your normal battles aren't exactly as brainless, is what i meant. until you level above what you're fighting, i suppose.

FF7 doesn't need any system reworkings is what i think most people would agree upon. I never really found FF7 to be that great of game, but i suppose its impression is the biggest on people because of all games released in their time and in the series, the technical/graphical leap between FF6 and FF7 was the biggest ever.

Reply to Spira about XIII shit:
    Spoiler: show
I didn't really skip anything along the way so I had 3 classes fully levelled (how the crystallium permited) for each character while I was going through the storyline. I can definitely understand difficulty if you were mgsing along the way, lol.

Two mobs I tried to avoid like the plague were the white skinned behemoth's and the bikes, too much hassle, and if I was forced into combat I'd just X mash while doing something else.

Because every thread always stays on topic on this forum, right? No few posts ever sidetrack from the discussion at hand? If FFVII has spoiler related shit in 2009 then I don't know. Stuff about XIII was a reply to the preceding posts and if mentioning something about gameplay (which was speculated on upon a lot on here in general lol) is considered a spoiler then I apologize.

The discussion stopped when miokomioko posted. Point was made and gotten across "god damn." I respected what he said, realized I made a mistake and the discussion stopped, this occurred several hours ago. Nothing further needed to be said and my reply was a direct response to Null himself.

I think the main reason why FFXIII became part of the discussion is because talks of remaking FF7 on the PS3 involve its capability on that system and the best point of reference is 13? lol

I hope nothing gets removed, I think the gameplay should stay the same (with a concession made to use the analogue sticks this time) and I think the only improvements made should be graphics and sound. And by sound, I mean re-compose the midi soundtrack using an orchestra & real studio instruments - not completely bizarre mashups/compositions that only sound vaguely reminiscent of the OST.

But I also know SE wont listen to die hard fans (it's taken them this long to remake it) so I have a feeling they'll fuck it up big time and there'll be scarcely any similarities left to draw comparison between new and old. Just using the same character and place names wont be enough to sucker me into buying.
