But I also know SE wont listen to die hard fans (it's taken them this long to remake it) so I have a feeling they'll fuck it up big time and there'll be scarcely any similarities left to draw comparison between new and old. Just using the same character and place names wont be enough to sucker me into buying.
Disagree. If a remake is made I believe more needs to be done than just a graphical update and sound. I might be the only one but being spoiled by today's games I can't bring myself to tolerate replaying the older titles (loved them upon release, though.)

Gameplay update is something that's most important to me in a remake. They can keep using levels and a materia based system, but I'll pass on random encounters and standing in lines against an enemy taking turns hitting each other. Lost Odyssey is a fine example of it, fantastic game that suffers from an outdated combat system.

i love how this has made it to 8 pages, yet I've seen nothing that it will actually happen.

RIP FF7. You were a good one for your time.

I never did get why people want a game to play the same but look better. FF has always been story driven game, reading almost like a book. A graphics update will do nothing for that, a change has to be made to how the game plays. If not just play the old one. It does not look that bad.

I liked 7, it was my 1st FF game. I liked 8 too all the way up to 12. If you are not going to change anything, then dont remake it at all. Just toss it on the PSP or DS and call it a day.

If they change how the game plays (dont mean the story) then it is not a bad idea.

Maybe others do not see it this way, however this is my view. I have FF7 and 8 n my PSP now so I have little need for a PS3 one, outside major changes to the style, like using the joystick.

There's no way to make 7 better, changing it in any way would be a step in the wrong direction. Imo, if you're going to remake a legendary game don't change anything except the graphics.

There are plenty of ways to make 7 better, it's not a perfect game at all, nor is it legendary. That's just nostalgia/fanboyism fucking with you. It's a good game and I love it, but it isn't perfect, not by any stretch of the word.

There are two paths of a remake.

One being a complete remake, with new graphics, a broader story, the battle system changed, updated and fixed, extra bosses, monsters and areas, in general extras, etc. In turn almost a brand new game on an old backbone

The second type being just a graphical update with small fixes in the story, tweeks in the system to fix bugs, some additions to the monsters database, and maybe a new town/area.

When it comes to FF7 this is a touchy situation. In one hand you want to make the game feel new by going route one, adding tons of new stuff, but in turn changing the story to where people arent familiar with it, and changing the battle system to where people may not like it. IE: Adding new materia, some sort of micromanagment system, changing how some materia work, etc. Going this route could be great, or really bad, as ultimatly the people playing are used to a game thats been out since '96, and mos of them will not want the story changed one bit, or their battle system changed at all, as this is what makes FF7, FF7.

On the other had you go route two, fix the spelling errors, gramatical issues, etc, dont mess with the battle system at all (except maybe nerf quad/mimic), and just add a new area, a couple new bosses etc. This would please most of the FF7 mass as all it is is a port of the original with pretty graphics. But would probably ostracize new comers as it's a tired old game.

Mentioned earlier was the post about 'if its just a remake with new graphics and thats it, ill just go play the original', you have to remember, people dont want change, in anything. It may seem we do, we want this change in this or that, but when it comes down to it, most people just like a daily grind, what theyre used to and nothing else. I think a lot of people would be happy with just a graphical update with minor additions and changes.

I would personally love to see new graphics, a few new bosses, a new area or two, maybe a small new side story to tie in all the new FF7 stuff, more games in the saucer, but I swear if they touch the battle system at all, I will be pissed. They can nerf quad/mimic, thats fine, add a couple new matiera, thats cool too, but the materia and battle system around it has been one of my favorite systems and the main reason why I like 7, and would be very pissed if changed.

Bottom line is I want the integrity of the original, but with a new feel, anything more than that has a chance to cause mass complaints. I thought the remakes of III and IV were good, but there were a lot of things that pissed be off, namely how esay they became. One of my problems with newer games/remakes/non2D games, is how easy they are, id like to see more of a challenge again.

FF7 was a good game it its time. But I honestly hated the materia system, it felt like a step backwards. I liked having Characters for there unique abilities and spells. Instead of this build a bear formula.

Like alot of people already said. If SE was really going to remake I hope they make so major changes to the systems, FF7 is pretty dated in terms of gameplay.

Thing is, you can update and modify a battle system while still keeping the old stuff there. I would be pissed off if they removed material, rather than change the way it worked. The end result is basically what you do in a battle, which, face it can change as well. Hell, you could apply FF12's battle system with the materia system (a stretch, sure, but shut up). The point is, they can make it work. They could keep the ATB or change shit up.

You say people don't want change but that's bullshit. People want change, people want stuff to get better, to evolve, otherwise we'd all still be rocking the horse and cart. And hey, the people who don't want change are the minority and often looked down upon. You want to be amish? Go for it, I'll be over here with flying cars and jet packs.

Seriously though, without change there's no point. Without change, SE really IS just milking it, trying to make a a quick buck without any significant thought. It all comes down to this, whether a remake is better or just a port.

I'm all up for a remake, you know why? Cause it'll never destroy the original. It'll always be there and it'll always be the same.

My only real complaint about final fantasies were the characters going to shit after 8.

Steiner, Eiko, Freya, Flaming Red, Beatrix, Lulu, Paine, Cid (Minus X/X-2s) and Vanille are pretty awesome.

Yes you'll be able to revisit the glacier after getting the Highwind.

You can always make something better, it is just a fact.

you can also screw things up badly lol.

they need to add a few mazes maybe change some to make it a tad harder. you can really fly by the game. It seemed so much harder when I was 7 and played it lol

edit: FF7 I did like a lot, it had a nice story, was a decent size game and did give you a lot of small side quest style things. If it was a pure remake no change outside graphics I really wish chrono would be the remake they went with. If they add on I would say FF7 would be my pick, maybe FF4. Just how I see it, FF7 was a big game it cost like some 50,000,000 dollars to make, uncharted2 was around 21,000,000 just to compare. It did show with the graphics boost back then.

really though? FF7 is one of the most heavily graphically driven FFs of its time. In fact, it was probably the one that propelled the graphic driven RPG story telling style technique in the first place, which is the real reason why JRPGs hit mainstream after 7 released.

FF7 was for all intents and purposes, a technical milestone of its time. It made storytelling possible using graphics to show what could have been done in situations. The Midgar Bombing Mission introduction would not have been the same without the use of FMV, nor would have the Diamond Weapon charges at Midgar scene been as dramatic. Or think about Aerith's death scene - the way she slumps over, and the white materia dancing on the steps of the altar according to the music. It would have been impossible to tell it well in 2D and I doubt real-time 3D would have been much better in that era. High-end graphics would have been needed.

FF has always been pretty story driven, but a lot of storytelling can be conveyed by graphics (and sounds/music and VA, but thats not the main point of discussion here). And I believe most people who want FF7 to look better don't just want the game and characters to look prettier, but are hoping that better graphics can help to convey an even better story, so a graphics update really isn't that divisible from the storytelling.

It can't be that bad to add an extra cutscene or such that help out fill in some gaps as FFIV did for DS.

Crisis Core was the modern remake of FF7 and I was very happy with it. Not really sure what more people expect.

People likely expect the 'main' FFVII to be more complete and of course a new optional dungeon with harder boss fights or pull the Dark Aeon card from FFX-I.
