Actually, it was a fairly interesting translation from a mechanical standpoint. Items, spells/abilities, job names, and so on were dead-on literal. The script wasn't very well grammar-checked, but I don't recall anything major where it strays from the original Japanese in intent. In fact, the poor grammar's internally consistent enough that it comes off more as just an Ivalician dialect of English or something. Kind of poetic, really.
The PSP remake deeply annoys me both due to the aforementioned 50% slowdown on 3d effects because of half-assed porting, and because they took the script, threw it out, and wrote an entirely new one in Early Modern English. It was atrocious and unnecessary. Messing up by calling the Samurai skill set Iaido (Inkidasu was its original name, and Iaido refers to drawing a sword from a sheath, not spirits from a sword) and getting Agrias' address wrong (it should be Dame Agrias) particularly grate on me, but there are bits and pieces here and there all throughout the game. It does amuse me that both translations refer to St. Ajora as male whereas FFXII refers to St. Ajora as female, although I forget if the PSP retranslation keeps the Yudora Empire backstory or not. The Germonik Scriptures were some of the best backstory in any FF.
Not to mention the PSP version removing the battle quotes. I liked those.
