They pretty much have all the VA they need from the movies and KH. It wouldn't be a leap for anyone to imagine what they sound like.

Besides the obvious Aerith scene, there isn't much a VA can do to take away from the story in FFVII. The AC voices were pretty good though given the plot.
^ Good memories there. Hearing Celine screaming about southern crosses at the top of her longs + great items every few steps with a broken little toy = good times.
Is this what the Final Fantasy franchise has been reduced to? New games / remakes will take forever to make because of the level of detail / graphics? For fucking Christ sakes do people honestly care this much about the graphical detail of games? Yes, graphics are very nice and dandy but seriously this is becoming a tired old tradition of games nowadays being pushed back / taking ages to come out so they can tweak the graphics. Graphics this, graphics that, HD this, HD that. I understand that graphics are an important part of a game but come on, this is absurd.
Whatever happened to good artwork? Whatever happened to creative environment rendering?
( I for one have absolutely no problem with pre-rendered backgrounds. Resident Evil on the Gamecube showed me that you didn't need an Xbox 360 or PS3 to have jawdropping environments. I can only imagine what kind of detail can be put into a pre-rendered background with today's technology. I can bet you for certain it would take far less time than most shit nowadays. But I digress.)
kind of disappointing we probably won't see FF's like 1-9 anymore with a world where you get to fly around in on an airship to explore. Kinda sounds lazy to me imo.
Good thing it isn't actual laziness then.

All of this is true
For the script, it would need to be changed completely to match the new cutscenes (you can't just read the script and expect it to make good scene). People don't understand that a 5 minutes "text based" cutscene --> 20 minutes voice acted cutscenes. That alone is already a huge task for the animator.
That said, a lot of the game could be cut, but these cut would make the one who want the remake rage.
The dialog would have to be rewritten from the ground up. Period. The only thing they would be saving time/money on is conceptual stuff, basically everything that is already established: basic storyline, characters, character design, the world in general... They have basically a video game (FFVII) full of conceptual visuals/background/lore but would need to be built from scratch.
Saying to SE "remake 7" is the same as if someone around the meeting table yesterday said:
"hey let's make a Final Fantasy-quality RPG game based on some dudes saving the world from economic destruction by a power corporation as well as an imminent meteor strike summoned by a bad guy they created and stuff, and we can use materia as a magic-system that is inserted into weapons/armor, and the towns should look kinda' like this, one has a big failed spaceship, one is a metropolis, etc, and we'll have a big black guy with a gun-arm, a shapeshifting vampire with a gun, a silent guy with amnesia and a big sword, a big boob girl that punches and kicks, a potty-mouth pilot with a spear, a flowergirl love interest that gets KILLED OMG, and uhhh yeah, let's do it... and everyone is expecting us to have done it years ago."
At first, I thought they would be retarded not to work on this project before I realized that they wouldn't exactly be saving any money by not having to write a new story and come up with a whole new world/characters etc. Then it dawned on me that the medium on which it was on, no voice, no camera control, no ultra details, etc meant they could easily introduce any number of important characters without hiring a separate voice actor, they could have huge chunks of text explaining the entire background story in one go without listening to it through the voice of a shrill old man (sup bugenhagen), etc. So many things would not translate from text + legoblocks to scenes of FF12 quality while not being mind-numbingly long.
They did a JP-only release of enough background material for me to say with some certainty that all that stuff was planned back in the early 90s.
Also I'm still seething over Golbez's real name being romanized as Theodor and Cecil's son's name being Ceodore despite being written exactly the same in Japanese and even being acknowledged that Cecil named his son after Golbez.
They made FF4-2 on basically the same engine as FF4, even though it was originally for a cell phone, so they might make more new games based on old systems. But probably not.kind of disappointing we probably won't see FF's like 1-9 anymore with a world where you get to fly around in on an airship to explore. Kinda sounds lazy to me imo.
Welcome to JRPGs. Even back in the SNES era they were hyping graphical advancement as being a major selling point. They aren't likely to make anything except the biggest, shiniest game they can because that's just how the JPs roll.Graphics this, graphics that, HD this, HD that. I understand that graphics are an important part of a game but come on, this is absurd.
someone needs to shop in a mako reactor or giant materia or something

This is one thing I really miss about the FF series. You never get to control airships anymore.
Honestly, I pray to god FF15 will go back to it's roots. None of this sci-fi crap, just a fantasy based world like the early games and a job system, or characters having a set job on them (Like FF4 and FF9).
Mass Effect 2 has a lot of cities, animations, dialogue, etc. That game didn't take 5 years to put out. I know it's a bit different than what FF is doing (read: completely different) but fuck, SE seems to just be copping out with "if it can't be done in a reasonable time frame we won't do it" You know it'd make a crapload of cash no matter how long it took. Bioware can put out hit after hit with usually amazing quality in half the time it takes most devs to put out 1 game.
I remember the days when JP games ruled the market, and every month we'd be looking forward to those games. Then when the Western games came out, everyone would groan because of how badly most of them sucked. Market did a complete 180. I think the last J RPG that was really good (for me) was Lost Odyssey a couple years back. Now I look forward to all the Western games and groan when most JP games come out. I dunno, just my feeling.
I haven't played many modern western games, mostly due to the fact I only own a Wii and I hate PC games just because I suck ass with a keyboard and I can't find a gamepad to save the life of me.
But yeah, FF has taken a turn downhill since 6 I think, 9 was the last memorable one to me. Hopefully the remake of Lunar: Silver Star comming to the PSP in March isn't a letdown. The demo was probably the most fun I had for a RPG in a long time.
And to keep this from turning into a Jap VS Western debate: If FF7 did get released on the PS3 how long do you think it'd take them to release FF9?
I doubt they'd bother with a FF9 remake just because "not enough fans want it"
if they did a FF7 remake, I know for a fact people would be wanting a FF6 one next, over anything else.
which is funny because if they were gunna remake any of the FF's with PS3 graphics, I'd want it to be FF5 or FF9 lulz. I found those to be the funnest
