Great Post. I've always felt the same way - it's just the cool thing to do.

    - First FF game after Square ditched Nintendo
    - First FF game in the USA to feature the death of a main character, and a dramatic death at that

I think all of the hype and mania surrounding FF7 has harmed its reputation, and that's a shame, because it's really a fucking great game. Materia was an incredibly flexible and fun skill system even if it was exploitable and made characters somewhat generic. The story was dramatic and was told in a way that wasn't really possible with the 2D FFs (even though I love them). There were plenty of interesting sidequests and the game was pretty lengthy even without them. It basically introduced FMV to a whole legion of gamers. And the plot was deeper than people give it credit for, especially if you delve into Sephiroth's backstory, connection with Lucretia and Hojo, and Jenova's original arrival and the way the Ancients tie into it all. The main character was a bit of a douche, but then, so was Squall, and so was Tidus.

I don't know, I just feel like so many people hate on FF7 because it's the cool thing to do, or confuse it being overrated (agree) with it just plain sucking (disagree). It's not my favorite FF, but the poor game gets ripped to shreds everytime someone posts about it in a videogame forum, and it really doesn't deserve that. It doesn't deserve the insane amount of hype either, I definitely agree. But it was a revolutionary game at its time, whose popularity made huge strides in getting a lot of more obscure and higher-quality RPGs to our shores.

That said, I don't own a PS3, but I'd get one for a remake. I'd love to see the world of FF7 brought to life in HD high-quality visuals. I just hope they fix the script if they do this, so many grammatical errors and weird inconsistencies (hello, Barret can say "shit" one moment but gets censored saying the same thing two sentences later?)

Remaking ff7 would be a mistake in the sense that they remake the game from the ground up. If they took the game and updated it, it would be a phenomenal addition to the FF series.

I completely agree with people who would love to see remakes of the older games. Numbers 4 and 6 would be awesome if remade. However, we gotta remember the nostalgia we have over these games includes what type of game they were. Back in the day, a RPG was a completely different animal than it is today. So part of why we loved these games would be different in a new game. Would this make any remake not live up to our memories? I think so.

I think they should continue to work on new material. Put more people on XIV and XIII's Language translation so we get these games sooner rather than later.

4 has already been remade on the DS. 5-6 are the ones that are left.

FFVII was my first exposure to Tetsuya Nomura character designs. I thought they were pretty cool at the time.

Now, not so much, after so many years of buckles and straps, I'm not looking forward to an HD remix of the little superdeformed legomen I enjoyed all those years ago.

Just hope the Ultimate Weapon fights are more strategic and not "level Y materia X times and zerg", also new and interesting materia that embraces more class style play would be nice. As well as new bosses and dungeons and sidegames.

I support a remake from the ground up and not just a lazy re-rendering.

I support remake if they make it more... interesting. I've tried to play through again but it's just too boring. Probably been 7-8 years since I beat it, and it seemed pretty good then, but it definitely could use more than just re-rendering.

Wasn't FF4 the first game in the series to have a character die? Palom and Porom, no?

I miss text based game...they could write as much story as they wanted at little cost. 3d cutscenes are sweet (and I love them), but they have to sacrifice too much when they make a story heavy game.

Takahashi original plan for Xenogears was a space opera, but his wife (soraya saga) gave him the idea to do the genesis on a random planet, and that's where the idea came from.

He couldnt get the right from SquareEnix obviously, but considering most of Xenogears ( and saga) are based on religious stuff, I'm not sure there would be legal problem if he did something similar (different world, different character, but essentially the same story). When he started Xenosaga, he probably wanted to retell the original story he had in mind in space, which pretty much lead to Xenogears eventually.

Xenosaga original plan according to early interview was 3 arcs covering 3 main characters. The first game was suposed to include episode 1 and 2 story. The 2nd game was going to cover the event that happen between episode 2 and 3, and the 3rd episode we got. After that, it's only assumption, but it's very likely the game would have covered Abel and Nephilim in a context similar to early Xenogears (this time, they would be on Abel's arc's planet, and not a random one).

Finally, the last 2 games would probably have dealt with Lost jerusalem, and what would come after Xenogears.

    Spoiler: show
Tellah (IV on DS made it more dramatic it was pretty painful to see). Not to mention the other chars that "supposedly" died but you find out they're ok.

There were other FF games that had people die in it as well... V (similar to the spoilered person) and VI (sort of)

FFVII is far from mediocre, is not my favourite FF but to claim it's tripe? Get the fuck out of here.

If they are remaking 7, why would 8 not be deserving of a remake? Or even 9? Personally I'd love to see them all remade, to PS3 quality graphics. However, I don't think remaking any of the classic FF's with 3D instead of 2D would have the same affect as they are currently. That being said, My votes for Xenogears and FF8.

I'd like to see an FF7 remake. I have the original but didn't get it til 2002-2003 so the graphics drove me crazy. I could never complete it because it felt like they were Lego men. I would definitely play a re-make with done up graphics though.

I'd like to see FF8 redone too but FF9 wasn't my favourite so I wouldn't care there.

FF7 was pretty meh to me, it wasn't even in my top 5.

However with this news a FF9 remake could be possible. That was my favorite FF on the PS1.

If they honestly just started remaking all their best sellers, their customer base would be just as happy if they did that instead of many new games, I know I would. Alot of the new games are meh imo. FF 4-9 remade, xenogears, vagrant story, I'd buy em all and be happy as a pig in shit.

Seeing as a game like FFXIII was so many years in development, it's not hard to believe when they say remaking VII could take 10 years or more

SE must be running out of money again. If they fix the glitches, plot holes, and restore the hidden Gilgamesh boss fight I'll consider giving it a try.

I'll put my money on 2017 for a 20 year anniversary remake.
