The best reason to remake FF7 is so that people stop asking for it. I wouldn't mind a remake, not my favorite Final Fantasy, but it was my gateway drug to the RPG genre.

Errrmmm.... nvm.
As said on the first page, FF7 remake would be cool - Xenogears remake would be a dream. It would be awesome if they could finally do justice to one of the better RPG stories with a complete game.
I'd much rather prefer a brand new game such as KH3 over a remake of a mediocre game.
What's the big deal with KH3 anyways? After the first game, the novelty of Square Enix and Disney characters in the same universe wears off fast. Also, it's battle system gets pretty repetitive from time to time. Couple that with copy and paste character designs and one of most convoluted story-lines in recent memory and it's really nothing special besides it's namesake.
This. With such a fleshed out concept like what we have in Perfect Works it almost seems unfair that completed stories and beaten-to-death sequel/addons/movies/side story collections surrounding FFVII would get a remake while Xenogears just sits there with its awesome story and system but shitty 2nd disc ending due to budget.
I have to disagree. KH's plot has become a messy jumble of secret characters, confusing plot points, and more deus ex machinas than you can count (he's the nobody of a heartless who formed when he split his heart with the keyblade to keep his girlfriend's heart from turning into a heartless nobody! wait... what?)
I liked KH, but imo it should have ended there. The plot was simple and clean (har har har).
I loved KH1 as well, but I haven't cared for the story since then. KH games have awesome gameplay that's a lot of fun with a good deal of stuff to do, so in that they're good. I dunno why I still keep going back to KH, something about the concept (not SE x Disney) draws me in.
I hope it's Secret of Evermore! (Seiken Densetsu 2 works too aka Secret of Mana)![]()
Super Mario RPG 2 (not paper mario)
I can dream
I'd love to see an FFVII remake..
but if that were happening, I'd also love to see FFV and FFVI remade for PSP first..
and III and IV for DS ported properly to the PSP. I own a DS but I refuse to play FF on it because of the shitty sound and graphic quality.
as for VII, I don't think I'd like to see a real remake but rather a graphical / textual update. The game - its backgrounds, environments and so on shouldn't be changed too much. It should look nicer though, and the characters look realistic (ala CoFF7 series).
Reworking of 3D models...
FMVs obviously need updating and I suppose the flavor of NPC text and so on.
Music and sound effects remastered...
but beyond that I don't think they should touch too much, so as not to change the overal feel of the game, or to portray it in the way it was envisioned but within more flexible technical restrictions.
the question I have for this is more of a technical one though. Given that they can likely put this out on PSP or PS3, which medium it would be on would greatly affect how big a difference the remake would be from the original.
Honestly I don't think the PSP would be able to fit a good remake of FF7, and I'd rather see FF7 being remade in PS2 quality, although not necessarily for the PS2 - because I actually don't want it to be like FF13 on the PS3.
It may seem a little strange, but i feel that if all the FFs were remade eventually (which seems likely, at least from 1-10, the ones before Square became Square Enix), there should be some form of technical progression even within the remade series.
the most recent 1 to 4 remakes follow this in some way - 1 & 2 being HD2D, 3 being fully 3D, although somewhat SD styled. 4 featuring voice acting, and so on...
I picked to stop at 10 because 10 still remains a past FF. It may have had a fuller development cycle but a lot of mistakes from Square's time were carried over. Localization inconsitencies, lost in translation series homages, and I suppose the fact that it still says Squaresoft instead of Square Enix. Also, 11 will never be remade and 12 doesn't need to be. It was developed to be at its technical peak on a systems whose graphical and aesthetic limitations are still widely accepted to be decent.
I'm for a total remake more than just a graphical update. Otherwise there's little reason to play the game other than it just having better graphics. I want an updated battle system (as in, better materia system etc), I want more story, new events, new bosses, the whole 9 yards.
Otherwise, I'll just replay FFVII on my PSP.
What Elcura said. This needs to be tackled as if it were a brand new title. If you're gonna provide a fanservice title like an FFVII remake; do it right. If they half-ass (only graphical update) it they could lose a big chunk of their fanbase.
I'd except at least
- graphical update
- script re-edit/possible re-write
- bonus dungeons, bosses, items, and materia
It would be nice to see, but I'm not getting my hopes up for
- expansion of story, filling of plotholes
- method to resurrect Aerith >_> shut up, they could put it in
- expanded/altered battle system
I agree with the script edit. If you look back at it now (I played it again a couple years ago) it was a pretty poorly translated story at times. One of the worst ever, I think was Final Fantasy Tactics, which wasn't all that much longer after FF7, iirc.
