I'm wondering if this magic power is permanent or not. It'd make sense if it's not, but perhaps it will allow her to stay connected and use Aquarius' gate, or perhaps she'll restore the key herself using Aquarius' power?

I can't remember if Second Origin was the process, or the actual magical power. I thought they used Second Origin to allow them to tap into their secondary magic fuel tank. Laxus and Erza already had grown to the point to use it, so they didn't get any benefit from it.

Either way, the end result was the same.

Second Origin was already applied to everyone who was lost within the 7 year gap, minus Erza and Laxus, who already had Second Origin activated.

The way I remember interpreting it was that Erza had already reached the point where she could unlock her Second Origin; she just hadn't unlocked it. The others are all reaching the point where they can unlock it and then having it unlocked by force (via Ultear's magic).
