We don't know the specifics of that spell, I wonder if it's the reason she's encased in the crystal. If that's the case, then she may have wanted to see about using that spell to return herself to normal. That seems a little more selfish than she comes off as.

I have a feeling she didn't want to have people around her die, so she sealed herself in the crystal and provided a way to control it. That might make sense why she's been viewed as a weapon. It would tie in with the magic Cana borrowed/used on Tenrou Island.

It almost sounds like Zeref wants her not for her potential as a weapon, but so he won't be alone anymore.. But that doesn't match with his goal of destroying everything.

Well, it sounds like those closest to him know of Ankhseram. It might have to do with him not valuing life -- if he wants to destroy everything, he doesn't value life, and so his curse is weakened.

This is answered simply -- he isn't valuing anyone's life in Alakitasia (Alvarez Empire) right now. He found some way of putting on a facade of him smiling, and appearing happy, but not valuing life at all. He's been doing it for quite some time, including the flashback of the most recent chapter. There's really no complicated explanation for this either, it's pretty simple (why I didn't spoiler, everyone should know this about Zeref already). When he values life openly and truly, everything around him withers and dies.

The irony of this post is the fact that before the Grand Magic games, Zeref and Mavis had a conversation -- one in which Zeref said he would annihilate humanity in it's totality, as a "gift" to humankind.

I think what will be interesting is how the will explain Mavis' Ankhseram curse in the next few chapters. Or it might be as simple as Mavis realized the curse and locked herself away in a crystal before the first iteration of Fairy Tail.
