PS3 with Old 'Square' Television

Just bought a PS3 on a whim and forgot I don't have HDMI inputs on my main television. It's also square, like old school not rectangular, but I looked it up online and apparently it has capabilities for '1080i', even though it's 'square'. I don't know a better way to explain this than that is it 'square', okay?

I'm wondering, if I hook my PS3 up to this beast, with the AV cables which come with it (referred to as component AV cables, correct?) that the image will render in 1080i, right? There is also an a DVI-HDTV port in the back of the television which I presume I could hook my PS3 up to with an HDMI>DVI converter cable.

I'm just worried I'll hook up the PS3 and the image will be shitty and I'll have to buy a new TV (one in my room is too small and lags). I think most of my problem stems from not understanding what exactly is 1080i or 720p, etc. The Sony television says it can output in those formats but it's 'square', I'm pretty sure those formats refer to a more 'rectangular' output which is more common with the widescreen televisions on the market today with HDMI cables.

If there is a DVI input like you say then yeah you can use DVI-HDMI adapter for your PS3 and no AV cables won't help you with the picture.

Yes and no...it can display 1080i, but it's the same deal as SD on a widescreen...you're taking a wide picture and squishing it, as opposed to a square picture and stretching it.
Unfortunately my experience has been that squishing is significantly more distracting than stretching it.

I'm not terribly familar with the square HD sets...but I think you can letterbox a widescreen image so you effectively get a 32inch widescreen display out of your 36inch square.

That said...if you happen to live on the EC and want to sell that set... well, you already found a potential buyer <---

Do you have a widescreen PC monitor? if u do you might wanna try that first get HDMI > DVI. Thats what i do currently i can get 720p on my 22in looks good. And i have surround sound setup through my av cables.
