    Help with Windows 7

I finally got around to installing Windows 7, but I'm facing a few issues:

    1. When installing, it asked which drive I would like to install it on, and I choose the Recovery drive (D). Now I look at it and it says it only has 1GB or so space left. When I installed Windows 7, I downloaded the file to a FlashDrive and opened it on the Desktop. Is it possible for me to change the place in which Windows 7 (I guess that's what it is...) is stored?

    2. Windows 7 is telling me my video card cannot handle the Bubbles screensaver I used to have on Vista. It's also saying my card cannot use "Aero", which I believe is the feature that makes your windows clear. I had this on Vista, so why is it a problem now?

    3. I have my own account, but I don't know how to add a password to it. I also cannot find the hibernate button on Windows 7. It was like shut down, but it would shut down without closing the application, which made it easier for me to get back to what I was doing before the shut down. Any ideas on how to find this?

My computer came with Vista, and a friend helped configure the settings, so I'm unsure of how all this works. Thanks for the help!

Terribly sorry about asking a random question in your topic without being able to provide help. But I didn't wanna make a new topic when this kinda fits in with the issues I'm having. Anyway, does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit without having to buy another copy? A relative fucked up (knew I should have done it myself) and got a 32 bit copy of W7, so just wondering what I need to do to fix this. Thanks, and sorry Yugl for the hijack.

    1) You'd have to reinstall to change which partition Windows is loaded to. You put it on the recovery drive, which is a small partition designed to have an image or files that you can restore the OS from. You should reinstall to the larger partition.

    2) Make sure you download and install the correct drivers for your video card. Then, go to "Performance Information and Tools" in the control panel and run the system assessment. This should enable Aero automatically if it passes the tests.

    3) Go to User Accounts in the Control Panel and click "change your password" to put one on your account. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-disable.html for the Hibernate thing.

To pass from 32 bits to 64 bits you need to format.

But windows 7 CD comes with the 32 and 64 bits version

Wouldn't it say 32 and 64 bit? Cause mine just says 32. Though, it's a new computer so a format and clean install wouldn't be much hassle.

Thanks for the quick and thorough response! I've also found out that when starting my computer, it gives me the option to use Windows 7 or Vista. On vista, it has everything from before. This is kind of nifty, but I'm assuming this kills memory as well. How do I deal with this?

Once you install Win7 to the larger partition vista will most likely be gone and all of your files will be in a Windows.old folder (if you do the custom install/format) ~ Else you can just upgrade in most cases...

Basically once you install win7 where its suppose to be you wont get a dual boot option again unless you specifically 'design' it that way

Thanks for the clarification. I'll ring again if it still occurs once I fix this (Learning to burn an "ISO"from a website since I hear booting it from a CD is much faster).

I'm almost done with this mess, but I have a few more questions:

    1. When I boot up, it gives me an option to use Windows 7 (Partitioned to the Recovery D drive) or the current Windows 7 I actually want (Partitioned to the C Drive). Is it possible to delete the other one since it's still taking space from the recovery drive?

    2. I tried looking for updates on my driver, but it said it was up to date. Does anyone know a good site where I can find the black/clear vista look? Also, is it possible to get back the bubbles screen saver that I had with vista?

    3. I was sort of hoping this update would clear the C drive. However, it appears relatively untouched.

If you insert the Windows 7 disc, you should have the option to format the D: drive in windows setup. Once you've done that, you should just be able to exit with no ill effects.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your card. If you updated rather than clean installed, you could be having some conflicts on that front.

From what I've heard, windows can use the same cd key on 32 and 64 bit versions except winxp. You'll probably have to find a 64bit cd somewhere, whether from a friend or downloading it.

I just formatted that drive now. I haven't restarted the computer, but that should take care of everything right?

Edit: On the mousepad of the laptop, there is a bar for scrolling vertically. However, it hasn't worked since installing Windows 7. Any ideas?

Re-install the mouse drivers should take care of it.

How do I do that? It looks like I might need to do that with the graphics driver as well since it's still not working with the screenrsaver (Standard VGA graphics adapter).

Might be specific to the manufacturer. If its Dell, then go to their site and download the drivers specifically for your laptop's model. Likewise for any other manufacturer/model.

I went to Dell (XPS1530), and they are saying I need to install drivers in a specific order (http://support.dell.com/support/topi...=biz&~lt=print). Is this true?

...no? I have never heard of that before....Although probably in theory some items should be installed before others but in general it doesnt overly matter that I know of.

Also dell has no drivers for Win7 for your laptop (atleast not through them) ~ If you have the nvidia card -- goto nvidia.com and see if they have the Win7 beta drivers available for your card. (They seem to @ http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us)

Vista drivers seem to work for most Win7 needs tho (http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid=)
