The legal arguments are pretty pointless and retarded because 1) few if any people here are actually lawyers (or lawyers on TV) and familiar with the convoluted laws on the subject and 2) few if any solid facts are even available. Square Enix gave us their usual vague announcement (who knows what differences there are in the JP/DE/FR versions) iifuzz is only commenting with unrelated one-liners.

The "Salvage Bans made everything terrible!!!" is also bullshit. FFXI has been going downhill long before then. It has more to do with people voluntarily quitting and moving on and SE pretty much leaving FFXI out to pasture to go work on 14 than the absence of a handful of people with Salvage shinies being gone.

Will SE ban a buttload of people for cheating again? Who knows. I don't particularly care.

I do have two questions though:

1) If you don't care about this dying game, then why spend a bunch of money to cheat in it?

2) If you're so truly indispensible to FFXI, then why put the whole of FFXI at risk by cheating? Please think of the children, when FF14 rolls around.

Yes a lot of good ambitious players were banned. It sucks, the linkshell I was in at the time got ruined over it. But you were a medicore player at best in a shitty uae shell, get over it.

Thank you for so neatly summarising two of the most prominent completely false notions entertained by the high horse brigade.

1) To start, no one said they didn't care about the game just because it's a shell of its former self. Also, the cost:benefit ratio of programs like App are excellent, and the cost wasn't even a factor if you knew how to get App for free on any character. Do you even know how much App/Wizbot costs?

2) No one ever said they themselves were indispensable to the FFXI community, but trying to deny that, collectively, the loss of countless top-tier players in January left endgame irreparably ruined on most servers is laughable. And yes, I do think endgame players and shells are the lifeblood of FFXI. Maybe that's because I've been a part of it, who knows?

People were referring to "NASA" as costing major $$$. That's what I'm curious about.

2) Your Server's Mileage May Vary. On Hades 1/21, 1/22, and 1/23 were basically the same. A few people I knew had new, angry player profile messages on FFXIAH.com, but that's about it. Any Hades player that's "BG Famous" is still here or quit of their own volition.

And believe it or not, there's still lots of people over on Alla who don't have Sky access yet, who've never done Dynamis, or completed a significant portion of FFXI's content, even today. They're all still logging in and paying SE $13 a month or whatever to play it. They far outnumber the endgame community I'd wager.

A total lack of new worthwhile content is what's hurting endgame, not losing a few of its players to Salvage bans. The only HNMs that are up unclaimed are the same ones that were before because they have loldrops.

People are bored with the same stale content and moving on. What's the newest "endgame" content? ZNMs? Other than PW those can all be soloed or low-manned by players with average gear.

More than a few of the Salvage ban people came back with new characters anyway. Doesn't Wopa already have a relic or three on his new char?

While camping Hazmat for around two weeks I saw a lot of people coming to get the genkai item from the bombs over time. Didn't really expect that many "newer" players in this day and age. Could've just been because of the winter break though

Freefall on Earth? Because I'm pretty damn sure that ToAU not only stopped the decline on population, it actually boosted it up a bit. It has been steady until mid-late 2008.

Guy is right, the real coffin maker was XIV announcement and I guess WoTG not really meeting the expectations.

About bannings...no it didn't have any major effect on the decline (at least on my server, the trick wasn't too widespread and only a couple of laughable, EU-based linkshells that literally had no impact on endgame went downhill). I guess It did shape up the end game arena in most servers but I'd hardly call it a big deal, or something that killed the game.

I'm sorry for what happened to the accounts and all time spent on them, but "duping" is hardly a minor issue and bannings were expected to be honest.

I'm willing to bet the vast majority of people claiming with utmost certainty that the bans didn't have any profound effect on the game are outside spectators who either don't participate in endgame or have some deep-seated hatred for anything and anyone related to it. Sorry, but you're outright wrong. If you've been part of a good endgame shell since the start of this year, you'd know that for a fact. There's virtually no good shells left - endgame on practically all servers is dominated by a bunch of noob wannabes, or shells carrying only a vague resemblance to what they used to be. This is because there's no one good left to fill the rosters. Perhaps you don't see it that way, but that's probably because you're a bad judge of what constitutes a good endgame LS.

Of course all of this is redundant anyway considering that once the XIV beta starts rolling and more people start getting invited at later stages FFXI is going to be left to rot. It's a sad thought, but realistically that's what's going to happen.
