There's also the MGS/MMX route. Dickfaced Chocobo, Lactating Tonberry, Deviant Adamantoise, Schoolgirl Marlboro.

Seriously though, I'm having trouble with it mostly because it's different. Let's be honest, that's the real problem. Most MMOs, most venues in general, use a single name, so that's what people are used to. I'm sure we'll get used to it, but it's thrown a lot of people. I do wonder if they'll flip the name/surname parser for Japanese and Western releases, or if there'll be a switch for it clientside. Hmm!

It's not name/surname, it's first/last name. There's no real need to flip anything when a first name will always be first. Our first names are different, but they still go first just as their first names will always go first. To put this more bluntly, if you put in Smith first the universe wont explode.

As long as I can turn the last name off in display settings, I have no qualm with it. I just dislike seeing twice the jumble of letters above a person's head or if I have to send a tell to somebody.

:/ Is it fair to have to pretend? A thief is a lot different than a monk, or a pugilist. Its like pretending a warrior is a paladin in xi. Id like atleast something that sets us apart, like dual daggers. Thieves are typically evasive, with light armor, and quick, but low hp. Not as resilient as a monk, or pugilist. But honestly I think that pugilist will be a starting job, just like in tactics how they had a squire. Its close range, quick, and has some thiefy abilities. Boxing a good place to start when learning how to fight in close quarters. And they could honestly call it 'fag' class and id still play it as long as it met thiefy criteria.

/console ....they will give us a real thief class eventually. ::shakes fist!::

It was nice to change your last name when you got bored of it. I only played dark age though.

Only safe way to get a truly unique name is to have a name where both words are coalescent. Im trying to find a name i want, just in another language.

It can't be a real thief class if it doesn't wield daggers? >_>

Well, if we're gunna get literal, a real thief is one who never gets caught and thus doesn't need a weapon. If we're talking assassin, it depends on how close you plan on getting before the kill, so anything from a sniper rifle to your bare hands can be used. If we're talking about a mugger, a knife fits the stereotype well, but so does a small caliber gun. A thug can use anything from a piece of wood to a chain to a broken bottle to all of the above.

What people WANT to be a 'real thief' is a guy who walks behind someone their friend is fighting, steals his crap and then pokes him with a knife.

Thing is, given that SE stated pretty clearly that melee can evolve into PLDs and casters in RDM, I don't see why people can't see that Pugs can evolve into knife-wielding rogues. More to the point, given the dual-wielding common in the fantasy archetype and our lack of knowledge on exactly how fast H2H will be in FFXIV (and our knowledge of how fast they were in FFXI), the difference seems very pointedly aesthetic.

Edit @ Vacht: Not 'pretend', grow. As in, Pug can grow into something that isn't strictly a MNK. No one really knows how a pug compares to FFXI's thief, but so far the difference seems to be in potential only. You people complaining about how you don't have your pure thf class are ridiculous. For all we know, we can eventually make White MNK healer pugs or heavy meat tanking pugs, yet I hear "why didn't we get a THF class from the outset?" SE gave us a catch-all light DD template that we're allowed to do almost anything with. Stop crying because they didn't make your decision any easier for you by cutting out the potential for creativity.

It's not a matter of how long they've stayed around. It's more or less running through Lower Jeuno and seeing at least seven different Clouds before Whitegate came out!

Yes, before someone points it out, my login name is the last name of the main character in Final Fantasy 8, as well as the avatar. However, I do believe that I'll be more creative by choosing something other than "Leonhart" as a first name... Was actually more inspired by the Japanese version of Final Fantasy II. One thing for sure is that I won't be using my previous FFXI name in XIV (Kiyoshi).

It sure as hell doesn't bother me. Personally, I feel that it gives your character more of a background and creativity (Wait... People don't want to be creative. People just want to play the damn game! )

I say bring it on, last name!

I dunno. I think a hand to hand fighter could work as a Thief just as well. The weapons aren't that different in the end.

But it's quite disappointing that people think if it's not using daggers, it's not a thief at all.

Ability-wise PUG could be thief just as well as anything. Especially when you can take all the thievish skills from other classes and apply them to PUG. It might be even better than XI's THF, if the evasion boost is actually significant.

lol, right? only thing is, now some chump is gonna have my first name and a diff last name. Well atleast im striving for that to not happen. Its about being unique, and yeah its lame, but people are always striving to stand out in their own way. I dont ever want to be mixed up with some douche bag who has a similar name. People can mix up names that are not related in any way.

Ultimately we shoudl just shrug it off, but to some of us we're crazy about names.

The Thief or Rogue is a character class in many role-playing games, including Dungeons & Dragons, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft and many MMORPGs. Thieves are usually stealthy and dextrous characters able to disarm traps, pick locks, and perform backstabs from hiding. Thieves are usually capable of melee or ranged combat, and tend to be focused on dodging attacks rather than withstanding damage. They often attack by dual-wielding daggers or other small one-handed weapons, relying on speed and number of strikes rather than sheer damage output. Thieves usually have a stealth ability, allowing them to disappear from sight, often this is combined with attacking an unaware opponent to inflict high damage. Thieves are usually restricted to the lighter armors, leather and the like. While thieves typically cannot practice magic, they might use scrolls or magic items in some games. In most fantasy settings, smaller and more agile fantasy races like elves, gnomes and hobbits are particularly suited for the thief class.

A thief's real talent shines in deceit, espionage or performing acts of subterfuge: lock picking, disarming traps, stealing valuables, and assassinating key targets.

When you find 'interpretations' of classes you find bad game mechanics(usually). There is a reason why sword and shield genre's have come so far. Granted SE can make a lot of things work - they have some really creative ideas. Yeah, i mentioned the growth, like squire from tactics and so on, so i agreed with you. And if you meant growth then correct your damn self instead of playing it off, like others are exasperating you because they cant read your mind. And considering your own mistake, your failing to read the context of my post. I merely expressed desire, and look at you lol.

I would rather run into sephiroth lucifer than igotigutchisan takawanatichiran. I feel like some people just throw letters together and because it is original and you can pronounce it they feel special.

    You run across these style names anyway, even with single name games ;_;

Aion's deep character creation led to characters being called oompaloompa, barackobama, preteen, samueljackson etc, all living up to their moniker.

According to the main site as well,

One of the Hyur's strengths is the staggering variety of languages and social institutions they exhibit.
The game is going to have many languages like EQ? Oh boy..

This, combined with the hinted wording in the alpha manual part 1, basically confirms we are getting female Roegadyn. Hopefully we can get the same with male Miqo'te

Still sure I want a Hyur, just not sure which tribe...

If your tribe dictate what kind of armor you wear, it might be easier since I'm leaning toward Highlander but I don't want to run around in Spartan "armor".

Don't you think it's a mistranslation? I think we'd have heard of it sooner from translations from the JP site, was this intentional. Me sceptical.

Or maybe you just really want to have female galkadyns.
