    I believe it has something to do with the fact that there is no R in the Japanese character set. I could be mistaken though.

    There is no real L in Japanese, there is an R. ra ri ru re ro etc.
    Their R is a combination of our sounds of R and L, so saying the word roku (six) you sort of slur the R into an L a bit. When saying none originating japanese words like remon (lemon), its more apparant.
