You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Idle comp kicks me off FF

OK so since starting ff again my comps been doing something really annoying.

    First off:

my computer doesn't recognize FF as an "active" program. By that I mean if I'm just playing FF, and not browsing internet or anything, then every few minutes it goes into it's "idle" black screen and I have to grab my mouse real quick to shake it to get the screen back up and hope no one died in the meantime XD (<-WHM).

Secondly, if it stays in that idle state too long I think it cuts the connection to the internet, because my FF will crash, and more often than not my web browser will freeze up if I left it on a website.

Note, before someone says it: I have auto-disconnect turned off, so no that's not it.

This is becoming irritating because just going to grab some food can disconnect me, and I want to be able to bazaar overnight sometimes.

Note: FF seems to be the only one to cause this, this never happened when I played WoW, WAR, Aion, etc. etc.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

It sounds like "Power Options" settings, naturally, so what OS are you using? Is this a desktop or a laptop? If you're familiar with it, I'd think going into Control Panel (guessing Windows) and clicking the Power Options or Power Management might dispel some of the mystery of what's going on. If Vista/7, checking a power plan, then going into Advanced Settings should have some relevant options, possibly.

    It's a desktop with Vista.

I looked at power options. Currently it's set to high performance.

it has an option in "change plan settings" to set the "turn off the display: 20 minutes"

If I set that to never will that fix it?

Are you using a controller to play FFXI? That would explain why your computer is going into standby because it doesn't see any mouse or keyboard inputs and assumes no one is at the computer.

I would think that if you get drivers for your controller or turn off the standby that would do the trick... if that's in fact what's going on.

Set the display to never turn off, hard drives to never turn off, never to standby, never to hibernate. You should be fine.

Also check the properties of your network card in Device Manager. Make sure the power management option: "Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" is unchecked.

I'm having a similar problem in Win7 Pro x64, Radeon HD 4890, and Catalyst 9.12. I have my PC hooked up to a receiver, shared with my cable box, PS3, and Wii. Whenever I change inputs away from PC it crashes FFXI. The only clue I get is other windows that were open at the time such as browsers are resized to 1024x768. I never had this issue while running XP. All of the relevant power saving features have been disabled.

Another issue I've noticed since switching to Win7 is that all of my icons e.g. equipment appear pixelated. The character models and terrain are fine, but all of the icons in the overlay have that 8-bit Nintendo look.
