im talking about the whole actual musician bit. you italicized musician to imply that there was a difference between a musical icon and a trained musical talent. this was my entire point the whole time.

people get annoyed with musicians because they dont listen to the same music for the same reasons. its two people arguing over two totally different worlds. theres nothing WRONG with pop music, theres just an ethical clash with someone being sold as a musical talent/icon that probably couldnt even explain what a mode is to someone that asked them.

people dont NEED to know that. there are some musicians that think they are superior because they know music, but those are just people that have a natural inclination to separate the elite from the many to make themselves feel better.

as a note, i dont think youre retarded, just not really exposed to compositional elements of music. youre probably too old by now to really internalize it because the brain treats music pretty much like language. you learn the rules and the emotional qualities, how to form words, sentences and books (notes, phrases, songs), and then the magic happens. you hear a beat and you start thinking and your body just naturally starts making sounds and you FEEL like your saying something.

if you ever watch a guitarist that composes their own work, you can see it in their face a lot of the time. most people think thats a lot of showmanship, but a lot of the time they cant help it. theyre so used to making the sound with their voice that when they tell their fingers to make a sound their mouth does it too. guys like vai and satch use that to their advantage to put on a better show, but they do that for entertainment purposes, not to "sell more records". ffs, they dont even sell records, they make their money touring and entertaining other people. its the fucking life, man

I started writing something but I got annoyed.

there are drivers and there are mechanics, some like to tinker under the hood and could do it all day, others just want to get out and drive.

I can listen to a song and maybe not recognize 7/4 timing but I have a good ear and can recognize patterns and appreciate what's going on especially if they decide to make use of certain production techniques or stereo (ie good headphone music)

the AMIGAD YOU CAN'T PLAY YOU DON'T TRULY APPRECIATE MUSIC argument that many musicans seem to bring up is really annoying
