Xbox 360 Thief logs into Live, Gets Busted.

December 28, 2009 - A Bronx man who stole a Xbox 360 console and other valuables was later caught soon after the thief logged into the system's online account, the The New York Post reports.

Detectives were able to trace the perpetrator's IP address back to his grandmother's home, where they would later find numerous stolen electronic property.

"On the day of the burglary, the victim used another Xbox and saw his system was already online," Detective John Hynes said. "At the house, we found Xboxes, PlayStations, GPS units, laptops -- a total of 53 items, including stolen credit cards."

Jeremiah Gilliam, 22, is being charged with grand larceny.

i don't own an xbox so forgive me for not knowing the automatic answer to this question. but, cant you just make a new account for xbox live using the same xbox like you can with ps3's? or would they still be able to track him down from some sort of device that they have installed? im trying to think of a few ways he would've gotten away with it lol.

The dumbass should'nt have hooked it up to the "internet" before turning it on. Then deleted all the profiles off the system.

They can only track it down I believe if the serial number was registered on the xbox.com site. A friend gave a friend another friends xbox for free because the 3rd friend in this equation was a bitch ass nigga, but the bitch ass had a parental lock on it, so you couldnt really do anything unless you had the code OR the Master Reset Code. Fortunately, Bitch Ass did not actually register the xbox. A quick call to MS Cust. Support, and I registered the system under my name and got the Master Reset Code.

It makes sense though. Say I got an xbox, put my profile on it, etc. but never registered it to my name, or like when someone gets an ipod and never registers it to their name. They would have no way to say who's it really is, they can only go off of who it's registered to.

I thought once you're registered it's kept on a permanent database on Microsofts end? It's been a while since I've played my redbox, haven't hooked up to the net since they started banning people who modded their boxes to play bootlegs.

Makes sense kinda, every Xbox has a special Serial Code that is sent to the Live Servers when you sign into Live. If you get banned for hacking or modding then the Xbox is banned forever from Live im pretty sure. Because it bans the code sent to the Server, which means you would have to buy a new Xbox to play Live.

Guessing the shop had a record of the xbox serial codes or something? im not sure how otherwise.
I dont think it matters what Profile you sign in as or what Profile you delete.
