For those that don't know how to, and want to block FFEvo permanently through your hosts file.
Simply download Hostsman (Download the .ZIP ver if you don't want to install it)
- If it asks to disable the DNS client, do so.
- Click the "Open hosts" icon.
- Click the "Add" button in the new window.
- Copy what is below and paste into the hosts name box.
Code:127.0.0.1 www.ffevo.com 127.0.0.1 ffevo.com 127.0.0.1 www.auth.ffevo.com 127.0.0.1 auth.ffevo.com
- Click "Save".
- Done.
edit: Updated the code, thanks Aikar.
If you block it from connecting to the server, the apps simply dont work. The authentication disables the DLL if it does not get a response from the server.
No you dont understand... it disables the dll, meaning all of the apps cant use it. FFACE pops up a message box saying it cannot connect to authentication server, then closes the application trying to use it.
Unless your trying to say stop it connecting from the auth server so it cant share your info....But just dont run a FFACE app if you want that, it only connects when you try to use the DLL.
Thought you were trolling a minute till you added that second part.
Yes, the whole idea is so that people don't connect at all to FFEvo, whether it be through the website, or when it attempts to connect to your computer to pull information through the .dll.
Which at this point I'd really hope no one is still continuing to use any application which uses the updated FFACE base. Its really just not worth the risk.
The point is to not use FFACE applications.
FFACE is storing PII (personally identifiable information) about you and your FFXI account each time you use any application that uses FFACE. The risk associated with this is substantial. It's just as though you were using FFXI-APP. It's also non-specific about what information is being collected, how it's being collected, how it's being stored, and how long it's being stored.
Furthermore, I wouldn't use FFACE on principle. Soliciting subscriptions
a) through others' applications, and
b) by masking it as a donation
is lame. It's lame to the developers who use FFACE to create many of the helpful applications we all use, and it's lame to the users who have no idea. The subscription page pops up automatically, as though the developer of the application supports it, and is asking the users of the application to donate.
Fraudulently masking a subscription service as a donation is lame. Logging information about users of FFACE is lame.
I honestly doubt he is storing everyone that is compared against his database. From the looks of it it is just doing:
Send encrypted SID / CID to server > Check if in DB > if not popup the donate screen.
I'm not arguing that he is doing the right thing, but I am saying that if you aren't a subscriber your information most likely is not saved, but just used to see if you should be rid of the donate nag / have access to the paid functions.
added a post icon for windower
Thanks, Pika.
So what plugin's use this FFACE? I assume if I use only what plugins comes bundled with the windower I'm safe.
Such a pity. FinalFisher is such a good app. Looks like I need a new fisher.
Absolutely no plugins or WINDOWER based applications use FFACE.
However there are many 3rd party applications on our "Approved Applications" forum that do use it.
Windower forums is the central place for other developers to post their applications, but these are not developed by the windower team and require moderator approval before its moved to the approved section verifying its a good program.
Mostly if not all windower developer based apps are done as Plugins, and not .exe files, with the exception of some things Krellion has written.
Anything on the Windower Wiki plugin page that comes in the form of a .dll only download is from the Windower team and does not use FFACE.
I will likely make an "old FFACE programs" forum to move all FFACE based apps too with a warning on the forum.
The only reason I ever used this is because I couldn't find any complete tutorials on how to read FFXI's memory properly using an offset (because the address changes every zone). Hopefully this will be some incentive for such tutorials to be finished.
every form of a hostname has to be added to host file to send it to 127.
if it resolves 'auth.ffevo.com', then the hosts file is checked for that, and if you only have ffevo.com w/o the auth. part, it wont be sent to 127.
hince why those hosts file ban lists has to list www. and non www. url's
