If I see something that I really like on someone else that makes them look more attractive, I try to match it.

Boxers or briefs, baby?
I don't see how it's pretentious to realize that people who work at mcdonalds will not dress the same as someone who works for 6 figures even though they're the same age. Education level applies the same philosophy. A high school drop out isn't going to dress the same as someone with a masters degree. At the very least, the social setting they put themselves into will dictate that, and realistically, they will have completely different mindsets toward taking care of themselves. Age is quite obvious, I have no need to justify that.
I have no idea why he even said it was pretentious. It's just a fact.
I dress based off what I believe are cool clothes that match my lifestyle, weight (skinny, so I don't wear anything baggy, only fitted), and salary. I also try to match the style of my peers and also social groups I want to associate myself with for whatever reason. In addition, I also have to dress business professional at work, so I tend to buy shirts and jackets I can wear with a pair of jeans as well as a pair of dress pants, which gives me a flexible wardrobe since I also go to university full-time and don't like going to class dressed up for work.
West coast and east coast are polar opposites. You walk around a business district in NYC and you'll be slathered in 3-piece suits. In So. Cal, you'll see jeans and blazers.
So, situation, education, salary, age, and location!
Yes, they are obviously tasteless and classless because they don't want to spend thousands of dollars on designer outfits like the stereotypical wealthy American.Always good to judge people you don't know. lol
I'm sure it has a lot to do with location. People are pretty laid back in Nor Cal.
You don't have to spend thousands of dollars on designer outfits to dress better than free swag t-shirts from gaming conventions and shorts. You should stop assuming that dressing nice means dressing excessively expensive.
I live on the west coast and have family in California. Yeah, it is a relaxed place when compared to the east coast, however, that does not mean everyone has bad taste (read: they're lazy) in clothing like your boyfriend and his father. I am not wealthy but I still dress nicer than free swag t-shirts from video game conventions.
There is more than the two extremes and dressing nice doesn't mean spending a lot of money.
If a girl tells me she likes what I'm wearing, I wear that. If not, then I either wear what's clean or comfortable.
