3D MMOs... Oh god. If you think people are dying from overplaying now - LOL.
To be honest, I think its mostly a gimmick to turn a quick profit from people that are like "omg must have naaaaaaooooo". I will admit that the technology is very interesting and if done right it can become quite the experience than just something that looks cool. Would be very effective if combined with motion controls/capture that aren't a gimmick. lol
Its a step forward, so I'm all for it.![]()
3D will never have an equally as big effect on games as it does movies because the essence of gaming isn't visual. It will look like a gimmick, even if it produces some amazing visuals on some amazing games.
I simply hope we don't call it "3D Gaming." We've had 3D gaming for years.
EDIT: The fact you can put 3D visuals on games that are already out shows that this is (currently) very superficial.
as long as there's still room for games like Odin Sphere and Muramasa, I'm fine. those two games are examples that prove we haven't pushed the limits of 2D graphics nearly far enough to justify leaving it behind completely. although you could probably work games like that into a 3D environment, it's not going to work as well as games like Mario 64 obviously, and that's what I worry about... I love me some beautiful 2D graphics.
I remember seeing this too.
I don't think it's particularly difficult for them to render out 3D in games already, as my understanding of it is that you basically double the framerate and on every odd frame you send out a slightly different image that's shifted to the left or right to give the illusion of perspective.
I don't think 3D will catch on until you no longer need to wear glasses. As someone mentioned in either this thread or the one in general, people don't want to don stupid glasses just to watch TV. It's alright if it's going to the cinema where wearing the glasses is part of the gimmick and experience. I think for longer term stuff like playing games or TV, they'll end up being uncomfortable.
I don't think we'll see the tech even reach 25% market dominance (in TVs or purchase of 3D content) in the next 5-10 years. I think it's going to take a massive breakthrough in the technology for it to really take off within that time. Also, everyone has only just upgraded to newer HD platforms, and not a lot of people can justify buying a new TV every year or couple of years.
brp said it right, gfx are great and all but if the game sucks im not going to play it because it looks nice
i'm not interested in 3D, at least not right now, prove to me it will be awesome but i'm jumping on the bandwagon just because its the next big thing
The 3D effect, let it be known as stereoscopy for the rest of this post to avoid this confusion, has very little to do with 2D vs 3D(whether it the way graphics are generated or play space, two very different things). I am confused how you think Odin Sphere and Muramasa couldn't use steroscopy as well or how their type of games would be threaten by this. Steroscopy can be applied to almost anything that has small shift in perspective.
This is why I think using the term "3D gaming" is bound to confuse people.
I don't think 2D games would use stereoscopy as well since there isn't a lot of transition (if any) between the background and the foreground, thus depth perception has little importance. Stereoscopy would still look cool with 2D games, but I don't see how it would have as much of an impact as it would with something where you can move freely on all three axes, which would fully take advantage of the feature.
Stereoscopy is entirely aesthetic so it will have little importance no matter where you put it(just like any old visual filter people put on games).
Indeed that more 3D games(in the way they play that is, the 2D graphics of Muramasa/Odin Sphere have NOTHING to do with it - they would not inherently benefit more or less than say... Street Fighter 4) would have more to show off thanks to having more dimensions to move in. However, this has little to do with "2D games being left behind" or not being "pushed to their limit." Your post seems to be preoccupied with existence of 2D gaming which makes me wonder if it isn't just a bunch of confusion with the words "3D gaming."
The point of my post is that stereoscopy gives 3D games one more advantage over 2D games, which are already in decline, when in reality, 2D games haven't been pushed nearly as far as they could be. It won't ruin 2D games or anything, but it certainly won't give developers any further incentive to develop them.
If this is anything like what this guy is describing:

then I don't see how anyone could argue that this technology won't add to the experience.
I don't think it will be like that as that requires head tracking. Possible with NATAL or PS Eye I guess. Head tracking and stereoscopic 3D combined together? I don't know if that is even possible but if so, I would love to give that a try.
Little weird talking about this like its new, 3d vision has been out for a while. It's coming soon for multiple monitor setups, so I guess that's kinda cool. But we already have live demos and can see exactly how it works/what it looks like if you have the appropiate hardware.
Embedding defaults to the 'cross-eyed' setting, so go to the actual link. Newest example I could find.

Any red/blue 3d glasses work on the default page view. 3d vision doesnt actually use this method, it flashes left/right(i think its the row interweave setting in the dropdown menu on youtube, but to view this way youd need to actual nvidia glasses.) You either like it or you don't, i can't see it getting that different because of multiple displays other than cool-factor.
i imagine this will be all the rage in coming years but now? even next year? doubt its going to be anything amazing
especially since we know whats games are coming out in the next year, and somewhat the year after that. Still need to get major developers on board and actually developing games like CODMW2 or next gen MMOs.
Until i see big name devs actually creating these games and making them big sellers i'm not buying into it.
Uhh, dont know exactly what you're talking about but this is old technology now man. And Cod MW2 works fine with 3d vision.. the titles dont need to be developed for the tech, its just a switch you flip:

The few 3D animated movies I've seen have been great. Avatar was ok in 3D, but for gaming I think I'll pass. Personally I don't see the attraction over the current state of gaming although I'm guessing it will go down very well in the casual market once a mass market price point is reached.
