    Router question

Throw it out the window or not?

On a serious note, this is getting seriously annoying as I can't do anything I usually do on the net.

My problem: After I boot up my PC/reboot router, internet is fine for about 5 min. Then I start getting a CRAPPPP LOOAAAAADDDD of lag. (My ping can go up to 1700 in L4D2/1 orange bar in MW2)

I have no idea what causes this so I don't know what to try.
Only thing i've tried is firmware update and countless router reboots.

You could run speedtest.net and pingtest.net just to see the health of your connection.

Possibly run ipconfig in the DOS box and get your gateway ip (the router address). Pop that address into IE/Firefox and log into your router (check router documentation for standard login details if you don't know/have them). You should be able to see your line speed etc and check the logs for obvious signs of errors/problems. If the line and router seem fine possibly spyware on pc is causing the issue so make sure and scan for that and viruses. Easiest way to see if the router is faulty is to try another one (borrow one if you can/don't have) or try it elsewhere and see if the problem manifests itself. I wouldn't advise getting a new router until you have eliminated your line and PC from the investigation and confirmed that they are working as intended.

A way I troubleshoot to see if it's the router is to completely remove it from the equation. Hook your pc directly to the modem. Some standard stuff... is your router wireless and secure with a password? If someone's leeching and downloading, that 5 minutes it's fine could be the time it takes for the computer to automatically reconnect
