    High Latency&Lag 1/6/10

So for the last day or so, I guess since tuesdays update, been getting massive lag spikes that go anywhere from 1second to 5seconds... and huge ms.

They are doing rolling restarts on 1/7 in the morning, hopefully that helps... but as of now, this is unbearable.

I'm used to a 50-80ms, but today its been 250 constant. Just now in a heroic, me and sister spiked to 2k and sat at 1200 for the duration afterwards. We almost couldnt finish the instance.

My computer was just reformatted, running windows7, so everything is a clean install. I believe I have port 3724 forwarded, however I have not done a "registry" fix for wow ms since I've gone to win7. Does that still work? Are there any other options my side that I can do to help this issue. I'm certain it's either Blizzard or COMCASTLOL, but if there are any fixes (such as the registry thing) then I'd love to know about it.

    Again:

    Windows7, recent reformat
Cable internet (Comcast, think its fios now as well)
both of us are hardwired to the router

Is it happening all the time? My server goes to hell in the evening because everyone is logged in to do the new wing of ICC. It's fine until about 7 PM.

I've been sitting at 250, and now up to 280 all day no matter the time.

The spikes occur randomly, and are usually like 1-2second spikes with no real change in MS.

However we did peak at 2k, then lowered to 1200 about halfway through a HPoS about 10min ago. It stayed at 1200 after that. After relogging and sitting at AH now, I'm back at 284.

This is a new occurrence, and it's quite annoying. It might just be comcast, which is why I'm looking for ways to lower my ms on my side - I don't know if registry edits work on windows 7 or since certain patches have come out.

Have you tested the rest of your connection while these spikes are going on? Anyone in your guild or the local channels remarking on lag spikes? Assuming it isn't related to the overcrowding associated with new raid content, I'd start diagnosing your connection and internal network, such as it may be.

I've noticed a few people mention it, and a few on tech support, but not too many.

I'll be up late tonight to see if it lasts into off-hours.

If it is myside and I need to diagnose and check internal network, how would I go about doing that? Call comcast and say wtf fix this shit?

Well, first thing to do would simply be to run a ping test to a reliable server like Yahoo. It helps to know what your typical ping is, but anything over 100-150ms should probably be unusual if you're on a high-speed connection. Using one of the various speedtest websites can also be helpful in trying to assess if there's any weirdness with your connection. If you have a router, you might want to recycle (unplug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in) the router and modem. Signal levels are helpful to know, but Comcast should be able to see those if you have to call in and speak to them. I've heard horror stories about Comcast, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a buzz and ask if they see anything unusual in your signals.

yahoo averages 20ms, google 24ms, 40ms from speedtest with 18Mbps.

Blizzard is resetting servers in the morning, that along with recycling hopefully will work. Otherwise its time for yet another call to comcast.

I guess no one else is really experiencing this? Anyone know if the wow registry fix works on win7 or if they patched it?

Yes the registry fix still works on win7 but I don't think that will solve your problem. I usually sit <50ms and today while not in raid i was touching 800-900ms.

Yeah, like I said, lag has been lousy since yesterday opened up the new wing. Even the instance servers are choking, which is unusual.

You happen to be on any of these realms?

Due to certain facilities issues, the realms listed below have recently been subject to some performance and instance capacity issues. We are actively working with our partners to resolve these issues and restore these realms to their expected level of performance and capacity. Another update will be provided when this process has been completed.

Well My pings to websites are still low, although today I did get a couple requests timed out.

Ping still around 300, in a heroic before i was at 500. For whatever reason right now I'm at 881ms and it's not changing.

Think I should call comcast? What do I say? "Hi, my ping is high, is this your side?"

I've recycled and everything, not sure what else to do. 1 day of this is enough, but 4... ridiculous

Have you posted on the Blizzard support forums? They're actually pretty good about responding. They'll ask you to run a traceroute (explained on the forums) and a few other things, but it can help narrow down if it is you, your ISP, or some link in your connection to Blizzard's servers. I recall a couple years back that a bottleneck was created between my connection from TimeWarner in Ohio to where my game servers were hosted and all I could really do was wait it out, which sucked a lot.
