Basically, I buy every RPG I play, and keep it.
After I'm 50-60 and am retired, I'm going to play through them all again.

    ftfy.

Square was a traditionalist company. It didn't do very well because it stuck to very stupid principles and had very short-sighted governance.

before merging with Enix, Square was all about big projects and big gambles. A lucky thing with Square was that their first big gamble (Final Fantasy) paid off, but another one (The Spirits Within) practically sent them to their doom.

not exactly on topic, but I honestly prefer Square Enix to Square because they've made much better business decisions and have still managed to appease the fans well. Fanservice + business sense.. win-win situation..

anyway, this article is so BS because its just assuming things out of what Wada says. It's already incorrect because XIV is already in the works...

And there is nothing that implies FFXIII is the last, or FF is ending.. all he's implying is that the development team for XIII will probably be moving on to a different kind of project.
even Versus XIII kinda qualifies in this sense, since its fundamentally different from a typical FF.

Also, since I believe FFXV is not coming anytime soon, they can afford to redirect resources to new projects.

meh I haven't seen enough SE to tell it's difference from SS tbh.

Also, took me long enough to start calling them SE instead of SS in the first place so

I dont see it dying....... in my lifetime.
Nostalgia for an entire series of games based off a singular MMO project completely displaced from the rest of the series is fraud.

SE concentrate on FFXIV. don't care bout the other stuff.

If SE makes big profits out of XIII they will continue. maybe not in this way, but maybe sell each month new things to XIII that you have to buy online to be able to finish the game.

doesn't matter to me: FFXIV all i want, period!
oh, and best FF for me was: VI

I've always considered FF the Madden of RPG's for this reason. For years, the formula always stayed the same (androgynous male lead gathers a motley crew to save the world) but the only noticeable change were little gimmicks within the gameplay. I'm actually surprised Squaresoft let alone SE made it this far without losing their fans and going completely bankrupt. Unless they do take a step further by trying to re-create the wheel, (or milk FF7 some more) the fantasy may be final.

    Spoiler: show
It would have been nice to see the cover for a Final Fantasy XXX though

I don't think that was the case anymore when we got to the 21st century. Before that, though, yeah. 7-9 are too much like each other. Ironically that's what the fans like best. Idiots.

Kind of funny how things work out right? Squaresoft was the shit back in the 90's and everything seemed to go down hill after X-2, XI, and XII. Looks like if it ain't broke, don't fix it. At least they could bust out some 3-D remakes to get some money flowing. I hope one of their guys reads this post since they've been known the browse the forum.

Hm, they might make more money that way but the games would become worse. I like the last decade more than the one before that, to be honest!

Final Fantasy XIII isn't going to be the last Final Fantasy, but it may very well be the last full, numbered JRPG installment for this generation of gaming.

Square Enix has set up a whole franchise around Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII, headed up by the main, numbered title: Final Fantasy XIII. Besides the announced Agito and Versus titles, they are planning to have the XIII franchise last a decade. XIII is almost like the VII of this generation, presenting new, mind-blowing audio and graphics, a high-technology back-drop and is full of innovative features.

On the other end, they have Final Fantasy XIV, a title that pulls elements from games near and dear to old school players. It's also an MMO, so they are most likely expecting it to last at least 7-8 years like FFXI, if not 10 or more like the XIII franchise.

Considering this, it really feels like they've set up "Final Fantasy" for this generation of gaming -- two solid, core games that cater to both ends of the spectrum. One shows how far Final Fantasy can push the JRPG, and one brings back the roots which earned it a place in gaming history. Both are core titles onto which they can build for the remainder of the decade.

In that case, no, I would not expect another numbered installment anytime soon, and it would make sense that they would instead move on to attempt to establish other innovative titles. But I do not think Final Fantasy is gone for good.

Wistfully I recall days gone by when the word JRPG wasn't a pejorative.

I don't get it. The gameplay was pretty similar in the first few games, but the past few have been attempting to change gameplay quite a bit, especially 12 and what 13 looks to be. I'm not sure exactly what they mean of having to cater to a particular audience with gameplay. Final Fantasy is just an RPG game with a great story, chocobos, Cid and crystals. Not sure how that ties developers hands.

With all the articles in the past year or so about Japanese devs being stuck in a rut n' all, it's only natural to see something like this come up.

To me, it would seem prudent that if they're going to try something new, to not slap the FF name on it. People have their own expectations of what an FF game is supposed to be. So one angle is that they probably just want whatever they come up with to be judged on its own merits, rather than how different it is from FFVII (or whichever).

It seems unfair that they are trying to change something that is already successful to make it more successful or more mainstream bleh (summons that turn into vehicles anyone?)
