Got it way the fuck backwards with the trollin, guys.
I didn't say the Universe made numbers, I said math exists because it is possible for it to exist, even required if it is logically consistent. Then you can move into MUH stuff if you want.
Comes from the mean of 366 days in a year, representing the 366(.25) sidereal days in an equinox year. It can be represented by 366 degrees with each degree representing 60 minutes and 6 seconds as present in the minoan system. This leads to a ratio of 366:60':6" . In this way, it is possible that ancient societies could have used a common building length to make a pendulum by observing venus, the seconds of which would have been common based on the common length of the pendulum. This length has been speculated to be a geodectic unit relating to the polar circumference of the earth, in a divisible 366 parts.
That's because our numeric symbol are in in base 10. If you write something in hexadecimal (0-9+a,b,c,d,e,f), you would have something similar everytime you divide by 16.
That said, base 10 sound like a good in between. A base that is too low mean you get extremely long number that are harder to read or deal with. A base that is too large mean the language become heavy (need to introduce many symbols). Also, a base that is too large isnt too useful in every day life either, since you rarely deal with large numbers (not so true anymore, but it was before).
[edit]
And fingers most likely have something to do with the "10", if you were wondering "why 10".
You didn't say that, you said that numbers are the language of the universe, as in, that numbers are independent of their creators (humans) and that they have some separate existence as concepts, not only that, you also implied that they were was some inherent link to the universe. Basically, you tossed out a bunch of metaphysical shit and pretended is was somehow scientific.
Holy shit, the video of your sig is awesome.
Concerning the mathematical universe. What happens if we multiply it by 0. I mean, it's possible to multiply something by 0, therefore, our universe could be multiplied by 0. Would we just stop existing and all the energy everywhere go poof?
Same question if we divide it by 0. Is the universe going to become undetermined?
That sounds farfetched to me. If one, two, and three are counted using your thumb and your index finger, why is 2x(otherhand) denoted using two fingers instead of touching your thumb to the middle of your index finger? The logical way would be to use your other hand to follow the same rules and thus the limit would be 144.Its actually pretty simple
Touch your thumb to the base of your index finger. That's 1. Now go up a notch. That's 2. Go to your fingerprint. That's 3. Continue on for the rest of your hand, that's 12. Make a thumbs up on your other hand, to indicate one set. 5 sets of 12 is 60. That's how people counted in ancient Sumer, where scientists believe that the concept of hours came from. Base 12 math.

Also, I stand by my opinion that we should forgo the decimal system and start teaching children the hexadecimal system instead of the decimal system. Why you ask? Because the decimal system is only used because we're comfortable with it and because it means we can use our fingers to help us count. Hexadecimal is so awesome, because the base is larger than 10 it allows for more exact answers with the same number of space (256 different values for 2 spaces as opposed to 100) and because it can be translated into binary very easily. Do you know how much of a pain in the ass it is to translate binary into decimal and vice-versa?
Uh? Why would you translate something into binaries or vice versa?
You wouldnt even save a lot of computing time, unless you are literally parsing millions of decimal per seconds
And the "saving space" argument is a bit ridiculous. Why not make base 16² instead, it would save even more space! I have nothing against base 16, and it would work just as well as base 10, I just don't see any real benefit over base 10
there is enough numbers to go around gentlemen, no need to argue.
It's not about the limit, it's about the base. It's base 12 math. Whether they actually counted to 60 or 144 is irrelevant, it still breaks down into being base 12 and explains the original question.
Also, good luck restructuring centuries of humans using base 10 math. That's just the way it is, deal. Or just survive the zombie apocalypse and then you can teach the new world any form of math you want.
Pretty much.
Mizango your post is supposed to be "lol"
What I learned from this thread is no one actually has any idea, and at best we have the guesses of some anthropologists.
My guess is we use base 12 because it's the number of dicks man in ancient times sucked per day...it's as credible as every other hypothesis.
Well, no, but exaggeration is fun.
It really is!
Though in all seriousness, we like to apply logic to all these ancient systems and reasons behind them, where if we compare it to modern times, we know that these systems mostly develop based on random traditions and not often through purposed use.
Basically I'm saying that we're probably wrong cause the reason we use 12 is probably some ancient meme we don't have a reference point to anymore, instead of something like our hands twirling, even if that makes sense. We do that a lot...most of history is just made up, lol.
That's always been my plan.
Actually, it's because that's the average length in inches of the dicks of men in ancient African tribes. Hence why we African American men are so well endowed. We were the only ones big enough to use our erect cocks as sundials.
Yet, I still think that base 10 system were most likely finger based. Sure, it could be some weird astonomy things, or the size of a dick, but if I had to put my money on something, it would be on that explanation.
Base 12 from what I read earlier on the net was initially created from base 10 (they deduced that from the evolution of the symbol or something). Considering there is no calculator, it makes some sort of sense that people were using their finger to count for both, before they create tool to keep track of numbers.
Anyway, I don't think anyone affirmed that it was undoubtly the solution, they just estimated it as more likely.
