Can someone explain why nbc will lose so much for the olympics? How did they even get the olympics, do all the networks bid on who gets to get to cover it and NBC bid the most and apparently overvalued how much they would get back through commercials and whatnot?

Actually I think they're working off a long term contract that they signed in the 90s.. I can't remember the last time I saw the Olympics broadcast on another network.

The Olympics have this very strange untouchable reputation for turning everything into gold. But actually the reality is that they wreak economic and political havoc and frankly, the winter Olympics are just not that popular. (How many of you can name where they're being held without Googling it? Yeah) But see, challenging the idea that the Olympics might not be as golden as the world perceives might take some kind of independent spine, which NBC clearly lacks.

He was the only show I used to stay up for and watch at 12:30 years ago. That being said, I hope he gets a late night show on FOX

I would be concerned if Conan moved to FOX. FOX has had a fucking horrible stint with holding onto hit shows in general. This isn't even including shit like the Joan Rivers Show or the Chevy Chase Show.

Conversely: CBS had the same problem, and look at them now.

NBC has had them on lockdown for years, in large part because of the same douchebag NBC exec Dick Ebersol speaking out against Conando. But essentially NBC intends to provide the same level of coverage that there was at the Summer Games and they paid 800mill for the right to cover it but theres no way they can generate the level of ad revenue the summer games do because there are less star performers/sports people care about.
